Royal Mail NO Smoking Policy

As from 1st July 2007 there will be a no smoking policy in all Royal Mail Premises.
Most Smoke rooms will be closed.

The smoke rooms that are 50% open can be used.

Smoking in my area will only be allowed during meal breaks, even then you cannot smoke at least 4meters from a doorway.

No Smoking signs must be displayed in all buildings and official vehicles.

The penalties and fines for the smoke free offenses set out in the Health Act 2006 are:

* Smoking in a smoke free premises or vehicle: a fixed penalty notice of Â£50 (discounted to Â£30 if paid within 15 days from the issue of a notice) or a fine by a court of up to Â£200
* Failure to display no smoking signs in smoke free premises and vehicles as required by the new law: a fixed penalty notice of Â£200 (discounted to Â£150 if paid within 15 days from the issue of a notice) or a fine by a court of up to Â£1000
* Failing to prevent smoking in a smoke free premises or vehicle: a fine by a court of up to Â£2500)

We have a outside smoking room but it is to close to windows and doors in my opinion to be legal.

The Local EHS Council Officers will enforce the Act if the smoke huts are not up to standard,I hope this helps?

In Glasgow they started off quite strict about the smoking ban...building canopys outside etc. but now in good old Royal Mail fashion its went back to do it if you like but don't get caught...if you know what I mean.

We've been told that there's no smoking on RM property. We have to go outside the car park if we want to smoke.

What are the screws going to do? We've only had the one out of the last dozen who didn't spend almost all of his morning pacing the dock, chuffing on a fag and pulling his hair out.

They're wrong! You can smoke 4 Meters from an open window or door.
So for instance the car park is ok.

Northern Ireland ban on smoking from April 30, never had a smoking room in my office (stand in the middle of the carpark) only 2 smokers left everyone else has quit

Reformed smoker of 40 years - quit 3 years ago after a mild stroke - personally I would chop the heads off all smokers - they are costing the NHS a damn fortune - and dropping butts all over the place - which needs a council worker to clean up after them - thankfully there is going to be a penalty for littering - and breathing out all that nicotine laden co2 - disgusting - it's time the government did something about it - anybody got a spare fag?

Now what about those filthy drinkers ............

in our office we have a 10 min comfort break once all ips is done at the moment but that will be gone soon so will prob try to give up again or go behind the bike sheds

what management in Manchester APC are saying is thats its a total ban on all RM property inc car parks and behind bike shed, so if you are caught its 30 lashes and deportation to one of our colonies

The problem concerned about smoking in a car park is that a Risk assessment would be required under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999

The reason is obvious a risk of staff being hit by incoming and out going traffic.

It might be worth asking your managers have they risked assessed the smoking areas

you should read the brief it clearly states in there that you can not smoke within 4 meters of a building or an opening e.g window so you can smoke in a car park for example if you are 4 meters or more away
