Sick pay was always in our budget, if they were to add it too already massive overspend then I sure, the manager would get the award for the worst run office in the country.

its a total cash reduction, has eff all to do with hours or anything else.
At some point an office will not hit its unilaterally imposed 5% cash reduction so they will end up chasing their own tails just for a couple of quid.
So far in my experiance the business has never put forward a contingency plan, so i always ask what it is when i get their proposals and it always turn out to be well we will see what happens, that's not good enough they've never had one so the proposals are rejected because there is no fallback position.

As far as i understand it your total cost for the office is
every hour of duty (inc p/t) + every hour of S/A = total hours required to run the office

e.g. duty hours for office including p/t hours is 1,000 hours per week @ £5 an hour= £5,000
S/A hours for office is 100 hours per week @£7.50 = £750
average hourly rate (duty + s/a) = £5.22 (approx)
total = £5,750
5% of £5,750 = £287.50
The £287.50 divided by the hourly rate of £5.22 gives you an hours target of = 55.07 per week

unforseen o/t because of high levels of sickness does not come into the equasion this is an extra that that eats into any savings you may have achieved thus far, basically anything that adds a cost to the operation of the office has a detrimental effect.
Reserves are there to cover a/l and sickness, so for example if you take a reserves to duty holder of 1 over 7 you have 8 people who, on average have 5 weeks a/l plus 1 week sick, this equals 48 weeks which leaves 4 weeks for christmas pressure, viola,ergo P.T.O, D.E.F.R.A, ect................

any which way its not good
