Hi me and my fellow workers are wondering about this ready recknor that we are supposed to work by, i.e. it tells us how long we have to prep and pull out according to size of mail on the day. We have pointed out that it's wrong(way wrong) and doesn't take into account buddy boxes, re-directions etc. Does anyone know what the news is on this, is it offical? Because it needs looked at.

Sorry friend that no one has replied to youre question
but it could be a case that none of us have ever heard of a ready reckoner and maybe your manager is making it up

I have never heard of a ready reckoner. I have heard of IWT (indoor work tool) I know its not agreed with union but in my area, managers use it as a guide to how an office is performing regarding indoor sorting. Sorry its a bit vague, I am not a manager and do not have access to it. I think its a computer program where you input quantities of mail, seperated into walksorted, manual, flats, packets etc number of walks etc. It tells doms how many indoor hours the office needs, supposedly. That is assuming the correct figures (ie quantity of mail) are entered. In my office these figures (supplied by mail centre) have been proven to be incorrect.

Hi thanks for replies, we have an A4 sheet on each of our frames giving us an estimated time of departure according to bulk of mail
i.e. mail %of office mail prep time pull out total time
15,000 3.9% 28min 10min 38min
this is not an exact one just of top of my head, but if we don't come near to this questions are asked, we won't to know where the figures came from(mars)? they say it's only approx, but we have walks with 200 more houses and they get 2mins more ha ha! i worked one out once doing an avg of 16letters a min @ 15000 and the prep alone was 12mins more than there figures. One guys sheet had his time for 408 mins (6hrs 48mins) they said it was a mistake so we said how do we know mistakes aren't made the other way??????

Thats interesting beanmuncha. I know the IWT can give an approximation of mail per walk. It works on the total mail for that day being 100%, then from the walksorted mail it approximates a % for each walk. Notice a common theme here APPROXIMATES. It does not take into account manually sorted mail, nor single or double slots on a frame nor amount of calls on a walk, nor firms / businesses. Do not allow managers to force you to adhere to such a document, wheres your rep stand on this? sounds total rubbish to me.

This could be what my planner was explaining today about how prep time had been allocated.
The machines count how many letters have gone into the walksorted boxes for each round, RM take the total figure of all rounds added together then work what % of that each round has. They then look at the total mail for the office and apply the % figure of each round to it which then tells RM how much mail a round has each day. RM then apply their prep test to this amount of mail to work out the prep time needed.
Im not really convinced by this, so will be looking to utlise the 4 week and 12 week review we have as part of our pegasus revision/area aggrement to use good old fashioned common sense and eye sight to make sure prep time allocated is accurate.
