MARCHING ON LABOUR
Over 600 postal workers and CWU activists from all over the UK marched through Manchester today, Mnday, demanding that “Labour must listen” and deliver a successful future for Royal Mail. The march noisily wound through the streets of Manchester, complete with bagpipes and air horns, culminating outside the centre where the Labour party conference is taking place.
The march was preceded by a rally in the Castlefield area of Manchester where CWU General Secretary Billy Hayes told the crowd that the Labour government must “fulfil its promises and maintain a fully publicly owned and fully integrated postal service”. He said the achievements of the union to secure the commitments at Warwick this year to maintain the public postal service would be voted in as policy today at the Labour Party conference.
CWU Deputy General Secretary (postal) Dave Ward said “the future funding of the service is crucial to provide a successful future and defend the universal service and protect workers pensions”.
Labour MP for Selby, John Grogan drew rapturous applause for his contribution when he said “there are three reasons to be cheerful on this grey Monday morning”. He outlined these reasons as:
“Alan Leighton (Royal Mail Chair) is going and is going beaten without the shares he coveted”;
“the CWU has secured a significant achievement at Warwick in the words that will go into the Party manifesto for the election”
“John Hutton (secretary of state BERR) has stated that there is general consensus that change is needed to the regulator”.
Other speakers included Katie Clark, MP for North Ayrshire and Arran, Steve Farley, North West TUC Chair and Lord Clarke of Hampstead who said “the introduction of competition had provided a cash bonanza for private companies”.
The rally and march was covered by ITN, BBC TV and radio, the Press Association, Morning Star, Manchester Evening News and local radio and television stations.

Did you use a wide angle lens there Big D?
Nice pics - shame I had to sit at home and watch it on TV whilst having a cup of tea and a muffin.
