Course at another office - Travel allowance..?

All the drivers at my office (which does not have a union rep) have been told that they have to attend a driving awareness course at another office 8 miles away. We are supposed to go on our day off from 7AM to 10AM in return for 3 hours overtime but our DOM is not paying any travelling allowance or travelling time. Are we entitled to claim this travelling mileage or time.?
Alternatively can we refuse to attend this course as we are all going to be out of pocket because of it, not to mention missing a much needed lie in on our day off

Don't go in on your day off (we need them more now than ever), if RM want to train/assess your driving then they can do it within normal hours.

You cannot be forced to do overtime which in essence this is what it is if you have to attend on an official day off.

He has to pay expenses. The Pay and Mod Agreement Phase 2 (which should already be in everywhere) says:

Working in nearby offices – Areas will identify and agree with the CWU locally a approach (which could include the use of volunteers and reserves) to working in nearby offices within employees’ contracted hours which will include travel times and appropriate travel and subsistence arrangements.

My advice would be to contact Local, Area, Divisional or National Rep ASAP and get him to have a word with local management as it sounds like he is trying it on, and there is plenty that the Union can do in this case.

Thanks for all your replies - I am due on my course tomorrow morning but will be having a lie in instead

First thing on Friday morning I will be getting in touch with my nearest union rep (15 miles away) to try to get some justice done for our office..!
