Approaching DOM about extended OT or finishing on time.
I am sure that it is probably the same in other DO's as it is in ours regarding OT.
On busy days we have to approach our DOM and tell him we will be late back. He then asks us how long we think we will be. When we tell him and if he disagrees we then have more words about it.
If we dont want to work past our time we must approach a DOM as soon as possible to inform him. We are then asked why. We tell him and he then tells us to do an A-Z leaving any mailsort that we need to in order to get back on time. Both create pressure as the DOM's tend to make you feel like you are P*ss at your job. Why should I have to go cap in hand to my DOM and ask for OT when it is obviously busy. Can he not just see that and put some figure down in the report.
I work for RM, 5 days a week, 8 hours per day. I need to get out of the office on my rural delivery by 8.45 am in order to get finished for 2.15 pm. It shouldn't be down to me to inform DOM's that it is busy and either I need OT or streamed, it should be up to RM coming to me and asking me if I wouldn't mind working on to help RM out and get paid for the amount of time I work over.
Can a Union rep please advise whether I can inform my DOM that I will not be working past my time and I need to be out for 8.45 each day. He can then approach me daily and work out the best solution for the mail that is left on busy days.
As from this week our ot dockets have flexi written next to our extended time. Some have had their figure changed with flexi written next to it. I wrote NO! next to flexi on my docket. It is becoming pathetic.

Do you feel angry or depressed, if so then go off sick with stress (this has started in my DO). And keep records of everything that happens ie. the denial of OT payments, the compulsory finishing of duty without payment etc.Broxi51 wrote:I am sure that it is probably the same in other DO's as it is in ours regarding OT.

Well, i know in my office there is the same few that will not work over there time, they tend to have to fight with the line manager!!!! And yes they do make you feel that you are not working hard enough. I know one guy when he said that was not working over they started counting his letters to check his prep rate in his frame!! crazy!! Well, my moto was normally that so long is i am on my own walk i will complete it, if i go over i expect to be paid, if that is not the case now then im not sure yet. If they move me to another duty then its cut offs for me each time!
I think that if one is over the finish time for that day we shud book, but what with the flexi thing with the longs and shorts, its all very confusing at the moment! We need to get a few things clear on this one.

I suppose I am angry by the way we get treated but not enough to justify stress. All I want is to come in and do my 8 hours. If it is busy then I would like my DOM to approach me and ask if I will complete with OT or give me a solution if I do not want OT. It should not be up to me to work this out but the DOM's who get paid to manage the office.
They must know how busy it is.

Do you feel like hitting your DUM if so then that's stress because if you do snap then it'll be your fault and you'll get sacked (of course if everyone in the DO has a kick at him then they'd have to sack everyone)Broxi51 wrote:I suppose I am angry by the way we get treated but not enough to justify stress. No, he's just an idiot (and childish and petulant) but he's still hanging on to his job even though he's had more complaints than any other manager I've heard about.Broxi51 wrote:It may just be my imagination but do you maybe, have a grudge against your DUM?disgruntledpostie1 wrote:Do you feel like hitting your DUM if so then that's stress because if you do snap then it'll be your fault and you'll get sacked (of course if everyone in the DO has a kick at him then they'd have to sack everyone)Broxi51 wrote:I suppose I am angry by the way we get treated but not enough to justify stress. That said if someone was to hit him I'd feel it was my responsibility to join in

Re: Approaching DOM about extended OT or finishing on time.
There is something I have never understood here – how does removing mailsort from a delivery cut down your time.Broxi51 wrote:I am sure that it is probably the same in other DO's as it is in ours regarding OT.

A) you waste time filtering it out or removing it from the frame.
B) you may still have to cover the ground and addresses that it was going to.
C) you will still have to cope with it the following day.
Any counting of mail or checking your performance is going to slow you down and put pressure on you, resulting in a reduced level of performance and is in fact a bullying tactic in your case. Performance tests are for trainees and new starters to monitor progress and suitability NOT a means of disciplining experienced capable staff.
As far as I am aware, the correct way to cull a walk is to throw in all due mail and deliver up to the point where your duty time will finish (as it is your walk – you will be the best judge of this) and it is then the manager’s responsibility to find someone to complete the duty. As they have slowly but surely reduced staffing levels to the point where we have no reserves, that could prove difficult – but it is his difficulty to solve, not yours. RM should be grateful that people are willing to complete duties to the correct delivery standard and should never query overtime payment requests if the delivery officer estimates that they are due.
And what is this flexi s**t – the only flexible working in place under present agreements is the move to longs and shorts – any banked hours arrangements have still to be negotiated, so if he tells you that you will not be paid – tell him your weeks work finishes after the 40 hours are up !
Yet another example of managers taking the yet unwritten laws into their own hands.

WARNING TO ALL
My office has been told that a new computer system is coming online in the mail centres. This system will know how much mail you have each day and will give the manager a delivery time span for delivery. Couple this with walk sequenced boxes and overtime is now dead. All part of the Georoute system.

That's balls because we all know the machines get it wrong (a lot) all you have to do is count the missorts you get in the code sorted bundles but I'm sure Tman will say everything is 100% accurate and that we don't deliver as much today as we used to.seeker019 wrote:WARNING TO ALL

And I suppose it will include as part of it's advanced computational capabilities the weather on the day, the number of magazines and brochures that are not sequenced (currently about 50% of items in my office), the number of recorded deliveries and large packets thrown back at us by postman drivers who can't cope 'cos there are no longer enough of them, the DTD's which you are supposed to prep in your walk prep time and last but not least the fact that on any given day, what can go wrong will go wrong.seeker019 wrote:WARNING TO ALL

Any machine that can tell me how long I will take to do my walk didn't even exist in Arthur C. Clarke's imagination, but I can tell after prep what house I will be at at any given time during the day to within 2 minutes so the only comment that immediately comes to mind is BOLLOX

But I thought Tman finally conceded that at the end of the day all MC's throughput is simply a pure guesstimatedisgruntledpostie1 wrote:That's balls because we all know the machines get it wrong (a lot) all you have to do is count the missorts you get in the code sorted bundles but I'm sure Tman will say everything is 100% accurate and that we don't deliver as much today as we used to.seeker019 wrote:WARNING TO ALL

Same in our DO - if we think we might go over we have to inform the idiots of this. We don't have to tell them by how much, not like anyone can ever give an accurate figure as we know everyday is different!
Can sometimes go over without having previously informed them - as long as you don't overdo it!
As for why it's done - I was told by a DOM that it was because the minority were taking the piss and booking over when they were completing within their time. So, like many other aspects of life the majority suffers due to a minority of piss-takers
A computer telling them how long it should take, hmmm - does it tell them how much time we waste waiting for lazy gits to drag their arses out of bed to sign for something? Or how long it takes to try and write a 739 out in the pouring rain with no shelter? Or how long it takes to carry a heavy bag in the midday sun? or etc or etc or etc.......

Does it calculate how many hours we wait in our rural office for the fcking mail to be delivered to our office in the morning? This really pisses me off. The only reason I have to claim OT is when the friggin mail gets to us 55 mins late in the mornings. When I ask the driver why he is so late he tells me that Managers aren't allowing vans to leave. So get the mail to us on time and there is no OT claim. Friggin Dom writing to us tell us we can't claim OT he is the friggin cause of it FFS.

A year ago my mate , an ex postie, was having the same problems so he went into his office and spoke to his domand asked questions and got the wrong answers it transpires , however what he did was took his mobile phone in with him and set it to video record and recorded the whole thing without the dom knowing , a bit underhand i know but one year later he has just effectively won an employment tribunal against the RM and video was used as evidence of harrassment , bullying and trying to get my mate to work for nothing and to unattainable targets....the dom could not reply has the vid spoke for itself....i suggest you do the same and save it on your phone/computer...
