I don't know for certain, but I don't see why it should be a problem. Unless of course you're still on Parole. After all, you've already paid your debt to Society.

Reps are voted in by the members they represent so I don't think there should be a problem. As long as you work for Royal Mail and they are aware of your conviction then it shouldn't affect the Unions position. Although I would be upfront with you prospective members so that it does not bite you in the arse later on.

If that is the case, then no. How could a rep actually represent the views of the workforce if he professes hatred for ANY group or individual especially on religious or racial grounds.

Ahhh, I think I'm beginning to understand now. So much for an end to the Troubles then. The bombs may have stopped, but the hatred is still thriving beneath the surface it seems.

Sorry, but here on the mainland religion has little or no importance (during work), so we just don't understand the problem. My point is still valid though, no Trade Unionist can exclude, under-represent or discriminate against a member due to religion, colour etc. How can they have the nerve to call themselves Trade Unionists? It is an insult to the thousands, past and present who sacrificed so much for the working man!

After 30 odd years of hatred it's difficult to turn it off but over on the mainland you have your own problems with other ethnic origins tending to support their own colour/creed/religion/race etc.

You're quite right: there are sometimes cases here on the Mainland, where people are prejudiced. But anyone who practices such prejudices, should not be a Rep.

I don't see a problem with someone disliking one group, or another. So long as they will fight as hard as they are capable, to protect the rights of them, dispite that dislike. Obviously, you are right, that you can't just "turn off" 30 years of hatred. But to be a Rep, you have to be able to rise above your personal views, and represent your Members. Whoever they may be. If someone is incapable of doing that, they should be replaced ASAP.

Disgruntled, Andy, I agree with both of you, although in my opinion the Troubles in Ireland have gone on far longer than 30 years and will outlast all of us. Who knows in 2 or 3 generations there may be peace there, not only on the surface, but the process has to start now. There is prejudice on the mainland, but, again in my opinion it is not as widespread. (This may be due to PC, or it may be that I don't see it)

I'm not a rep but I would expect any rep in our union to fight for the rights of any member regardless of religion, colour, ethnic background, whatever. To discriminate against any group would violate the very principles of a Trade Union Movement.

Having said my piece, I am thankful that I don't have to live and work in an area where discrimination and bigotry in any form is the norm. To those that do, remember we are all equal and deserve to be treated with respect. There are many who rise above the local prejudice to make their communities a better place.
