Postal Course for Organising Ambassadors

Further to Letter to Branches 1109/07, Branches will be aware that the National Organising Department in conjunction with the Education and Training Department has put together a bespoke training plan designed to equip every branch with the skills to enable them to recruit and organise in all workplaces where we have recognition or not. The course modules are as follows:-

Recruitment one to one

Recruitment at induction classes for new starters

Recruitment in the non recognised sector

In line with the commitment set out in Letter to Branches 1109/07 we have trained a number of Organisers on two national courses which has given us the resource to enable us to roll out the Regional programme. Once the Regional programme is completed Branches will have the resource which will put them in a position to train all of their local representatives. The intention of the exercise is that once all the phases of the training are completed then all CWU representatives situated in Royal Mail Group workplaces will have the necessary skills to enable them to recruit non members within their workplace. The course will also give the Union a greater focus on external recruitment which is essential in the current climate.

The Regional courses that we have currently organised are as follows:-

Tuesday 22nd - Wednesday 23rd April - Birmingham - Midlands Region
Thursday 1st - Friday 2nd May - CWUHQ - London Region
Wednesday 7th - Thursday 8th May - Bristol - South West Region
Wednesday 14th - Thursday 15th May - CWUHQ - South East Region
Tuesday 20th - Wednesday 21st May - Stockport -North West Region
Thursday 22nd - Friday 23rd May - Glasgow - Scotland Region
Wednesday 28th - Thursday 29th May - Newport - Wales and the Marches Region
Wednesday 18th - Thursday 29th June - CWU HQ - Eastern
Week commencing 2nd June - Belfast - Northern Ireland (date to be confirmed)


We cannot overemphasise the importance of this exercise being a success. It has been stated on many occasions that the Union must either "recruit or die" and branches have to realise that this really is the stark reality of the situation. In order for the Union to recruit effectively there really is no alternative to eventually having representatives in every workplace who have the skills and the knowledge to enable them to carry out their roles effectively in terms of recruitment.

It is the intention that all Branches within a particular region are represented on each regional course and that two members attend from each branch. Please could you therefore encourage those members who have the enthusiasm and determination to make this programme a success to attend the relevant regional course.

Currently the course does not attract paid release but the business has been approached regarding this and a decision is imminent.

Perhaps the union should change slightly, not offer such over the top wages to certain people, listen more to its members or have reps that actually give a s**t and are not in it just for themselves and then maybe more people might be tempted to join..

The most important thing with this is recruitment across the sector so we can achieve a minimum wage for all postal workers and stop DSA undercutting us all the time.

Business Post allegedly illegally threatened their staff with the sack if they joined the CWU which made the CWU all the more determined to recruit . Many staff are on NMW but as Postcon & Crozier say Royal Mail's labour costs are too high and their staff are underworked & overpaid .

to be honest even though i am a union member, i couldn't really suggest to anybody that they join the union after the last classic "shafting" we were given after last years strikes!!! whats up ward and hayes, scared for your own futures after betraying us so badly??? i only just trust the union slightly more than i do the sly bastards that manage royal mail!!!

I think that to keep the higher echelons of the CWU in touch with the work force they should actually spend a shift with postie, in either a MDC, MC, SO or DO or even SPDO at least once every 3 months. This would both show leadership, and would of course ensure that the view of the grass roots not the view as filtered through union local, regional and national politics.
