For ill health you've got to show that your health issues will last longer of what RM class as "Foreseeable Future"
and that your health issues dampen any chance of you performing your full duties.

Which is 9 months and over

so say you're on a waiting list for a surgery, say Back surgery, then your consultation appointment, then the actual procedure and recovery time can be at least 12 months dependant upon your NHS Trust district wait times.

Other things will be considered too such as OH referral for any type of possibility of adjustments to duties, Some people have had to follow that path before looking into IHR.

also to get a assessment for IHR, you also have to be referred by your line manager under your request in writing if all avenues have been looked at or be off continuously sick for 10 months Plus -that triggers HR to look into IHR assessment.

Under ANY circumstance neither your manager or Union rep is allowed to get involved, it HAS to be your decision so when you do leave- you cannot state you was Pushed out by X/Y/Z.....

Just general questions.

If someone is off sick for 12 months and has used up the sick pay, What happens.

Do they still send in 'sick' notes to Royal Mail; are Royal Mail obliged to offer IHR if there is no reasonable prospect of a return to work at this stage.

After 12 months, you get Pension based pay- which is pretty low- roughly around £150 a week that is comign out of your pension scheme.
This can be claimed along with either ESA (Income Based Employment Support Allowance) or Universal Credit.

Yes, you keep up with the fit note (or sick notes) because thats proof to your employer that your still unwell and not able to perform any type of work.

That depends upon you, if you want a IHR, then write a letter and pass it on to your manager or another manager if you don't feel comfortable with a certain manager, the HR thing might have stopped due to funding reasons like having stages of VR (Voluntary Redundancy) throughout the UK.

If you are that serious, I suggest a letter that explains your conditions, the long term issues and that you want to consider a ill health assessment.

Note- all of this is through my own experience with ill health, i left after 17 years through IHR with disc degeneration in L5/S1 and sciatica which since leaving RM back in December 2023, has morphed into Chronic Pain condition called Fibromyalgia (FM).

Thanks to the Union bottling it, the ill health offering is 16 weeks non taxable lump sum (based upon years of service, 10 year capped), Along with a 12 weeks PILON payment (which is Taxed) was brought in back in September 2023.....

Before that it was upto 34 weeks payment..... and heavily taxed too.....

RM have probably looked at it that you aren't able to return to ANY type of duties within a period of 9 months , If you are that serious about challenging the decision, you'd have to return to work prompt without any type of sickness related to your back in the future- as that's what RM expect...... No remorse, No duty of care to your health.....

you can disregard/challenge it and probably expect you to hand in your notice or carry on regardless with possible Occupational Health recommendations - they also won't pay you after 12 months of Pension Based Pay as that's capped too.

From what I've heard and Not seen any posties around my end for about 4 days now- It looks like we've dodged a big bullet with the chaos that is happening in RM now- as much as it's been caused by themselves.
