Few questions from a new guy

Post by stivshilly »

Hi folks

Im new to the forum and its my first post, thanks for having me!

Im super excited to be starting my job as a postman next week.

I have been told my first day will be spent in the house doing a new starter course and then i begin work the next day.

I just have a few questions if anyone is able to help :Very Happy

What should i expect on the first day?

What should i wear? I can imagine it will take a while to get uniform :cool

As i start on the 19th of this month is it likely i will receive any pay at the end of the month?

Any tips or pointers are welcome and would be much appreciated

Cheers troops :wave

Wear something comfortable take weatherproof shoes and coat just in case you are sent out.

You'll most likely be doing a lot of training videos and shadowing a senior postie indoors.

As your gonna be paid monthly hourly you'll likely get 2 weeks pay at the end of the month.

Remember the manager is unlikely to be your friend, make sure you get everything in writing or witnessed by another member of staff.

Hi & Welcome :wave

I joined in October.

Just to clarify, is the 19th your official start date, or your 1st day at the Delivery Office (DO)?

Day 1 should be an online induction day, with information videos & chats with the RM training team. Day 2 Should then be your 1st day in the DO. If you've been reading through all the posts on here, you will have noticed that new starters don't get the smoothest on-boarding & formal DO introductions are very haphazard! (see my 3 day in post viewtopic.php?f=2&t=114327) Has it been confirmed whether you'll be going onto morning walking postal duties or afternoon parcel deliveries (called DPR)?

I'd strongly recommend getting a decent pair of walking boots/shoes until you can order full uniform. Be prepared to be covering around 10 miles a day of walking when delivering normal mail. Also get some good wet weather gear. I wear a wide brimmed hat in the rain, which really helps & stops me getting rain down the back of my neck! Yes, wrap up in frosty weather, but you'll be surprised how quickly you get warm with all that walking.

For those of us paid monthly, the cut-off for Feb payroll is the 16th. It's highly probable, based on your Feb 19th start date, that you won't get any payment on the 28th. So be prepared to have to wait until Mar 31st for your first paycheck!

Also, download the Royal Mail People App. Once you've registered, full access will be available from your stat date.

Good Luck :chuckle :chuckle

Good luck with any 'formal' training, I was trained with two posties who never trained anyone before, even though your meant to be with a work coach.. don't expect your walk to be thrown in as its meant to be, you will come in to around 2 or 3 trays of mail to throw in, then you got all the packets as well.. expect it to be nothing like you prob think the job is.. your in for a real eye opener to how Royal Mail is run, and how the actual mail is secondary to the parcels and packets.. apart from that alls good!!

Hi guys

Really appreciate the response, apologies i seem to have locked myself out this account and its mental getting your password reset lol!

Going to be a tough march but it will pay off in the end hopefully! I have comfortable footwear and clothing and i think after reading quite a lot of posts on the forum, is expect the unexpected.

Im hoping that the do im going to is ok in the sense of training but im sure ill get through it :pray

It seems like "training" in both MCs and DOs is just the "ass covering stuff" and then it's here's your work area, here's the work, get on with it. RM expect you to learn everything as you go
