As far as I know you are entitled to Special Leave for the funeral of immediate family (parents/siblings or children)
For an aunt I think it would be discretionary, but in my office you would probably get unpaid leave, depending on
your record.
If you are in a small DO and your Manager is unable to cover your Duty I guess it would be more difficult.

If you've already had the time off your manager could just grant the Special Leave (Unpaid) retrospectively.number 1 wrote:thanks yes i did go. but the point was am i allowed the time off un paid?
Tell him it was important to you that you had to attend.
If he is at all decent he will record it as Unpaid Special Leave.

Its a few years ago but....
I was able to get unpaid Special Leave to go to my Wife's Grandad's Funeral a few years ago. Although I still to this day, think that it was completely out of order for them to demand that I show them the Death Certificate, before they would give me the time off!
It was extremely embarrasing to have to go to my Inlaws, and ask for the original Death Certificate so that I could come to the Funeral. Luckily, they didn't mind me asking (although they thought it was a strange request), but I sincerely hope that I never have to do anything like that again! RM don't seem to appreciate that we have feelings.
If I was you, I'd put in a complaint against the manager who refused the time off. You gave plenty of notice, and presumably produced the Death Certificate for their records (the insensitive bastards!), so there were no reasonable grounds to refuse you the time off.

When my aunt died a couple of years ago I had to take it out of my annual leave, I tried explaining to my manager that I was closer to my aunt than my mum but that fell on deaf ears.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

A couple of years ago I had problems obtaining paid leave for an aunt's funeral even though I was responsible for arranging it. Had to take out a grievance procedure to sort it out. Leave was granted exceptionally, but worry is I've still got 5 aunts and uncles to go, none of which is getting younger.
