Hello,
I was offered a collections job yesterday and I have a few questions about the process.

How long for they pre-employment checks take ? I do have a notice period and I don’t want to jump in and hand this in if there are any issues which there shouldn’t be.

I declared I have an asthma inhaler so OH have said they need to speak to me. Is that going to hold things up?

Does anyone know what’s involved in the Van Driving Risk Assessment?

The checks and recruitment process is great to check the rights from the wrong but I haven’t had much feedback on what’s going on or what the next steps are and it makes you a-bit nervous!

Hey Polly,

Welcome. I'm not sure about the pre-checks, but I was a collection driver for about 6 years in a rural area.

The driving will be fine. An independent assessor will meet with you and you will drive around as you normally would. (please check if diesel or electric vehicle as they are very different).

It's just to show you are a competent driver, plus all the usual health and safety checks.

There's nothing to worry about.

Asthma is just the sort of thing that needs to be noted, but no, there isn't any real reason it could prevent you doing your job, so no, it shouldn't hold anything up at all.

It needs to be noted, for thing like, if you lose your inhaler or have a failed prescription renewal and need to miss days of work, it can be balanced against any "stage" or dismissal possibility in the longer term. In general, nothing, but juuust in case, they know and can account that perhaps once in 10 years you might need 3 days off because the NHS can't source new inhalers and this shouldn't count towards your sickness.

The van driving assessment is just that. If you can drive your car fine, you shouldn't have issues with it. Just be careful, remember your seatbelt, be a bit more defensive on driving out of junctions on right hand turns etc.
