Will RM be privatised in the next 5 years?

Do you see Royal Mail being privatised in the next 5 years? Everything the regulator and the management are doing, everything the Government is not doing points towards full privatisation. What do you think?

Yes. As soon as they get an agreement on the Pensions, I predict that they will wait a year or so for the heat to die down, then announce that they are Privatising us.

The Pensions deficit (as far as I'm concerned) is the only reason that they haven't done so already. After all, who in their right mind would buy Shares in a Company with such a big debt on it's books?

Ive no doubt that was the idea, but with a crippling pension deficit and a strong union RM is unattractive to private investors eg no private company could financally have coped with having 8 days of I/A it would wipe out the profits, which they would then have to explain to share holders. Unfortunatley unions now have no natural political party to turn too, in my own personal opinion New Liebour are worse than the tories!!! So the only way to stave of attacks on our pensions, and privatisation is for us to remove the people at the top of are union who seem to put political ambitions before the needs of there membership. The only certain way of avoiding privatisation is to keep a strong independant union, so i think at conference this year us, the grass roots need to make our voices heard!!!!

When complete, using creative cost apportionment techniques,MC's would be ripe for management buyout at a knockdown price. Alan does like sparkling new FMCG warehouses and shiney distribution hubs.

Just leaves delivery; part time workforce,minimum wage , low pension bill due to high staff turnover,ditto CWU membership,
Still labour intensive ,awkward , I'd guess any MC buyout winner would insist on an extended guarantee covering costs of delivery therefore making privatisation unattractive.

Or use your industrial muscle and hit them in the pocket,make it such a costly exercise all their plans go belly up.

To revive earlier comparisons made on here, the CWU may not possess the macho industrial image once held by the NUM ,but in terms of real power, influence,direct and knock on effects,the massive financial repercussions it can cause through all sectors of the economy ,well there is no comparison. RM will more than likely be privatised when the conservatives gain power in 2010 as Brown would like to do it but cannot due to his small parliamenary majority and the possibility of an embarrasing back bench revolt.

Cameron will have a suficient majority and when pressured by crozier will allow RM to be privatised or allow TNT etc to come in and run individual offices and mail centres.

I cannot see it having much effect on us anyway as we are only paid roughly 9 pounds an hour and if they try and cut our pay down any more I will go and stack shelves for 6-7 pounds an hour rather than carry all the crap we do out in all weathers for the same money.

A partial privatisation will be announced in the next Labour election manifesto, it will be a 49% sell off with the goverment keeping a 51% majority share, that way they can raise much needed revenue but still say they havnt sold off the business...UNITY IS STRENGTH.

As i see it the delivery aspect will stay but we will handle every buggers mail offer the final mile for everyone and stay under public ownership. The Royal Mail brand cannot be aloud to be repalce on the streets the public wont have it and its a brand worth billions. However the mail centers will be sold off or franchised out to our competitors who have the free capital to invest in new technology and are more flexible. Nobody cares who shifts their letter p and down the country but they dont want 3,4,5, postal services walking up and down their garden paths.

Nothing short of reulator reform and full public ownership is CWU policy for labour, even those in favour of labour link see this as a good enough reason to ditch the link.
