Driving allowance if you drive 7.5t (600cf in old money) called 600 because back in the day it Royal Mail used 7.5t vehicles that were 600 cubic feet (bit of useless information sorry :cuppa ) and generally distribution is late shift so if it is you get late shift allowance.

Now you mention it I wondered why they were called 600's (yeah I know I'm sad)
I thought it was connected to the ldv vans being known as 200 and 400 for the bigger version but I think 200/400 was actually the model number for them.

Now we are getting geeky :chuckle and you would be right 50, 150, 360, 600 were all called that because of the original cubic feet of each vehicle and I suppose it’s just stuck? same as why we still have duties it goes back to the end of the war when the vast majority of service men finished their army service and came into the post office they had duties in whatever military service they were in and that then rolled into the postal service! Again sorry for being geeky

Back when it was a genuine public service and folk were proud to work for RM, it's a real shame what the place has become.

Yes indeed  I’ve been in Royal Mail coming up to 40 years and the last 3 years has been the most challenging for me personally and I know that my colleagues share the same sentiments! It seems that everything they are asking us to do goes against everything we have been trained back in the day to do :cry

I am a 600 driver & we used to receive a 600 allowance but that has been included in our main wage now.
I think it’s worth roughly a £100 pw.
We had 3 delivery guys start at ours 18 months ago & according to them changed their lives.
Breaks are there to be taken by law tho & you will need your CPC altho RM put those 3 thro it.
What we are driving is another story, a million kilometres is not uncommon & the very few newer break done even more than old.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

100pw is pretty decent, it would make a big difference to your pension as well.

Is the driving allowance still pensionable? I was told although I can’t verify it that it was only pensioned until 2012! I hope that was false information :hmmmm

I would assume as mentioned earlier that the allowances is now incorporated into the wages, the whole thing becomes pensionable, somebody more knowledgeable than me could confirm that.

I’m thinking you’re probably right! I was just told from someone who has just received their pension and that’s what put doubt in my mind :hmmmm but I hoped they were wrong!

Some guys from my office have moved over to distribution and said they get better money, I would imagine better pension too.

It got me thinking.

Yeah I’ve just did a bit of digging and didn’t have to dig far! Like has been said driving allowance is part of your basic wage and your pension is a percentage of that basic wage so if you’re payed more your pension contribution is more by percentage :thumbup
You quote “got me thinking” is that you would like to move over to distribution? Which is probably (at the moment :hmmmm ) good for your health and from what I’ve read and seen mental health aswell and I’ve always said when I’ve talked to different delivery postmen/women when I go to different DO’s the highest paid should be the delivery section but putting that to one side when you go over to distribution and 7.5t and over driving it is better paid but that doesn’t come without its drawbacks you are generally working late shift up until 10/11 pm and nights plus weekends including Sundays so it is still unsociable hours but more so you can very easily fall fowl to the many driving regulations which Royal Mail are at this moment very heavily clamping down on and I’ve witnessed delivery guys that have come across landing themselves in deep s#@t unwittingly and totally innocently because of infringement of driving regulations to the extent of conduct coding and potential dismissal and don’t get me started on the general public and having to explain yourself when you’re out on the road :mad (big red marked vehicles and people wanting compo ;liar ) but if you have the opportunity to come over go for it :thumbup but remember Royal Mail class you as “professional drivers” because of the extra money so you f#@k up (and we’re only human) they will use that against you when you’re sitting in front of them with your union rep

The driving and tachograph regulations are very clear and covered in CPC training so ‘totally innocently’ doesn’t come into it !
