Bank Holidays being given as day off

Post by Posty'sPartner »

Hi all

My partner is a part timer and works different walks each day or week (floating?). He is entitled to one day off a week which varies, but he hardly gets a saturday and if there's a bank holiday he's practically guaranteed to be told that is his day off.

I know he and the manager dont get on - I personally think its bullying, but surely he should be given different days off? Can he do anything or does he just have to love it or lump it?

That's what happens whenever you're a reserve, everytime there's a bank holiday it is also my day off and because my DOM is a devious lying little weasel he tries to lose those days :mad of course I'll be having it out with my rep on Tuesday about it (again)

Assuming you are working a five day week with shorter attendance - If a day off falls on a bank holiday - you are entitled to a day in lieu - ask the manager when you can take it.

Best thing they can do is keep a log of days off that they are given off to see if a pattern is building up. However, one good thing is that if their day off is a bank holiday they are entitled to it back later in the year, this way they can use the odd day to make a long weekend.

Also if they truly believe they are being treated unfairly it would be best to see their Union Rep. Also at my place floaters who are on a duty for a week, they get the same day off as the assigned postie, when I did it I never got a Saturday off.

I'm a reserve and get the same deal - I've never been scheduled a Saturday off without booking it as annual leave. I've started recording everyone's Saturdays off and days in lieu entitled as the manager never keeps a record. I'm sure it will make interesting reading in about 6 months time.

This is a shitty little trick they all like to play and it winds me right up, so much I want to break a little screws neck!!
Because we struggle to get resource meeting these days this occurs.
They hope part-timers are naaive enough that they don't realise they are owed a day off in leiu.
I hate them for trying this on because I consider it also taking the piss out of the rep and undermining him!!

Ask your manager to print out your leave card after the Bank Holiday weekend it will show on there your days in lieu. If you have not had them added ask him to print you a leave card after he has updated the system (man power plan).

Tell hubby/boyfriend, to follow the advice given by both, Rhino and DOM. If his day off falls on a bank holiday, he's entitled to a day off in lieu.

you can't have a day off and it be a public holiday too,
it is this simple
you can't have 2 days off in 1 day

sounds to me as though your DOM is deliberately deceiving your partner in order to deny them their legal entitlememnts.
might be an idea to throw that line at them to watch them poo themselves.
tell them you are seeking legal advice, now that would be funny.

Well this manager seems a bit of a swine to me. Apparently he is stating that he can decide if and when boyf gets the day off according to business needs. Usually if he complains about something the manager gets revenge - like changing the walk to a hard one at the last minute or one where the post has not been sorted out.

As said in previous posts he is entitled to a day off in lieu if his day off falls on a bank holiday. When I was a reserve this sort of trick was used on me as well and sit really pissed me off. Next time it happens tell him to tell his DOM that he'll be taking Tuesday off as well since he has gained a day.

I would count how many bank holidays your partner has worked and if he as not received any lieu days for these bank holidays worked, I would claim everyone of them back and if he has been working on a bank holiday, at what rate his he being paid? Whether your partner is a 'floater' or not he should be given the bank holidays off and then is normal day off in the week, this is what use to happen when I was a part timer. He needs to go and see his rep union rep, how many other posties is this happening to?

He says that it happens to others, but it happens to him mostly. I think half the problem is that boyf cant stand up to his boss and gets bullied. Other staff apparently swear liek troopers at the manager and there's been a few fights in the office too. I really want him to get another job because the environment is terrible where he is and he isn't happy at all. It makes things worse when he reports a dog attacking him and the manager said he couldnt do anything unless the dog bit him (which it didn't only because boyf swung his mail bag to scare the dog off but the owner of the dog then started threatening him!)

If the manager won't do anything about then the dog should be reported to the local council dog warden and the owner reported to the police (don't be worried about going to court I'm going at the end of the month regarding an incident that happened at work)

Sounds like an office out of control with a manager to match - whether managers are aware of it and ignore it or not, they have a responsibility for our health, safety and welfare whilst under their control. This guy sounds as though he ignores problems around him and bullies anyone who he can to make life easier for himself.

A good manager does not have an easy life and must confront problems and provide a just and fair environment for the employees he is responsible for.

Your boyfriend has limited choices here.

Appeal to a higher authority such as an area rep for assistance
Become a rep and be trained to deal with the idiots concerned
Ring the bullying and harassment helpline and ask for a written statement of his holiday rights to show to the manager.
Leave and work for a civilized business.
