True telemetry officially went online on the 3rd March 2008 in some areas. Sure you can read all about it on the CWU website in Letters to Branches.

Vehicles implemented this a few years ago, and the CWU were really suspicious as they saw it as a spying tool. Now they are supporting it.

It's a standard tool used in logisitics fleets and about time Royal Mail started catching up the rest of the players. Considering they have one of the largest fleets in Europe you'd expect them to be a bit further ahead of the game!

Telemetry

The Union met with Royal Mail on Tuesday 26th February to discuss the use and roll out of Telemetry in Royal Mail. Part of these discussions included the Drivers Risk Assessment (DRA) and the Road Traffic Accident Procedure (RTA).

The DRA (Copy attached +WTLL brief) has now been agreed and is being rolled out across Royal Mail commencing from the 3rd March 2008. This is being done exactly in line with the process contained in LTB 08/08 dated 8th January 2008 issued by Dave Joyce and Terry Pullinger, and provides for a consistent approach across the Royal Mail Group.

Royal Mail has also agreed to our preferred approach regarding the roll out of the DRA, Telemetry and RTA. Initially Royal Mail had proposed that all 3 documents be subsumed into one document and had presented the Union with a document titled “Managers Guide To Improving Driver Performance Through The Use Of Driver Risk Assessments and Vehicle Telematicsâ€

They switched ours on a few weeks ago, then switched them off the next day due to a high pitched alarm going off for 2mins everytime you switch the engine on and off.

Not heard any plans to switch them back on as of yet, we still have not been issued with the key fob thing that shows your the person driving.

That would be the reason for it going of you need to put a fob to it every time you swtich off the engine/ignition and wait for it brakeing and speed and tracking!. FOR GEORGE ORWELL WAS ONLY 24 YEAR'S OUT AFTER ALL!.
