Morning guys
Just a quick question.
Partner took bad recently and ended up in accident and emergency/hospital via an ambulance that took hours to get to us!
Has ongoing health/mobility issues and I had to take Special Unpaid leave to look after my partner.(Basically as a carer as I've got nobody else to help me).
Questions.
Is there a time limit on how much time you can get off to look after a gravely ill/sick partner/family members via unpaid special leave?
Are management within their rights to continually ask for updates as to when I return knowing our situation?
If you take unpaid special leave to look after partners/family members..can Royal Mail management stage you for having time off despite the fact they haven't payed me?
Morally, I would personally find it despicable to issue a stage warning to someone who has taken unpaid special leave to take care of extremely sick family members, but we are talking about Royal Mail and the current climate within the company.
What I find shocking and somewhat disturbing is the lack of empathy or sympathy from management in my own personal experience.
No asking about how your partner/family members are ...nope...just when are you coming back!

Historic day for unpaid carers as Carer's Leave Bill receives Royal Assent
Also for that day...
Family emergency leave: Where there is an immediate need to deal with a more serious emergency to do
with a dependant e.g. they are injured, give birth, or there is a death. Leave is normally one day with pay, with
further days either unpaid or covered by annual holiday. Exceptional circumstances might warrant three days
with pay.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Sorry for your predicament and hope your situation has improved since the ambulance call out!
Firstly make sure your rep, or if they’re rubbish, area rep is involved to advise/guide you, it’s for these occasions we pay a % of our salary.
Looking at the below Royal Mail policy document from 2021 it says…
“Long-term care for a dependant: It can be hard balancing work and caring for a dependant who is ill or unable to look after themselves. In these circumstances you should speak to your manager, who can help you explore your options. These may include alternative shift patterns or a flexible working arrangement. In longer term situations, unpaid leave of up to six months or a career
break of up to two years can be arranged.”

Unfortunately at some stage a negotiation will probably need to be made with management over a time frame you need to be away and most likely this will be an unpleasant interaction. But if you have an agreed period of unpaid leave the unsolicited management calls should stop. Again any liaison should be done with a rep’s advice if your manager is a tosser.
You would only be issued with a stage if you had to take PAID SICK LEAVE for some mental health issue surrounding your family circumstances.
