Holidays weird hours deducted!

Post by neviboss »

In February this year I went from a reserve to a duty holder. Previously a week's holiday would be 37 hours, but now, I have had 37.23 hours deducted twice and 37.17 hours deducted!!!

Nobody seems able to give me an explanation, my contract is 37 hours, so I get paid 37 hours, so when I am on holiday I get paid 37 hours. WTF!

Is it RM screwing us over again?

Answers on a postcard.........

It's because now you're a duty holder it'll be affected by your day off in the holiday week so if your day off was a short day like Tuesday/Saturday then you'll use over 37 hours for a week off.

Ye I'm on a wally week and only get 5 weeks holiday (paid 37 hours not 44.5) so effectively 25 days holiday, but if I was on a rotational day off I would get paid for 6 weeks holiday 30 days, so I think I'm 5 days holiday pay down.

You have to use 6 days holiday to have a week off on a wally week, (in effect you're saving up 5 days off to have in the 6th week)
6 days x 5 weeks = 30 days holiday so no you're not down.

Surely someone at your office should have explained that to you when you started on the wally week system.

Ye but I'm only getting paid 37 hours which is fine when I'm on a wally week, but when I'm on holiday I only get paid 37 hours which is 185 hours holiday pay a year against 222 for someone on a rotational day off

No the extra days holiday is counting towards your next wally week off just like working a 6th day every week for free does, think of it another way then, when you're at work you do 6 days but only get paid for 5.

It's different for rotational day off rotas they only use up 5 days because 1 day out of the 6 is a day off.

I've tried to explain the best I can it might be easier for someone to explain face to face when you get back in to work.

Ye but they still get 222 hours holiday pay and I get 185 losing 37 which ever way you look at it. If I work my wally week I get 44.5 hours pay.

Although you are on the wally week system, do you still have longer and shorter days while you are working?
And as a result longer weeks and shorter weeks?

A wally week simply banks your days off over 5 weeks to give you all 6 weeks days off together, so if they were long or short or all the same length it still all should balance out.

If your attendance length varies during the week (such as a 7hr Tuesday, 8hr Wednesdays and Thursdays and something in between on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays) which week you take off will affect the holiday hours taken

If you took the week in which you would have had a long day off (if it wasn't banked for later) you take less than 37hrs leave

If you take a week off where your day off is a short one you take more than 37hrs leave

I'm on a 1in4 some weeks off cost me more than 37hrs some less.

As a reserve, it's all on the system as a flat 37 because it's easier for managers than creating a rota that balances it properly...I guarantee that there are 1000s of reserves past and present, up and down the country that RM actually owe hours to due to making them work long and short days but not properly managing it on "the system"
