knackered every day nearly
I'm 22 and as fit as anyone my age but nearly everytime i get in from work i feel knackered, i get between 8-7 hours sleep a night so maybe could do with a bit more but surely i shouldnt feel like i want to go to sleep everytime i get in from work, what kind of job is this?
I've worked for RM for about 8 months now and love the fact that i get most my afternoons off but i cant do anything with them as most the time im tired.
does anyone else have this problem?
Also i've been wondering lately do i really have to work the hours i have been doing? Today i worked till 3 o clock and my finishing time was 12.30, ok so its overtime but my finishing times have really pissed me off the last couple of weeks, i wouldn't mind if it was any other job with overtime but its the fact you are constantly walking and it gets so tiring.
Apparantly i am on one of the hardest walks in the office so once i become a floater and learn the other walks i'll be ok but i just wish that time would come sooner, we have already had one lad do my walk and he packed in because he couldnt handle it.

Theoretically and in a perfect world no.Rage wrote:so if i go in and there's loads of mail, and it looks like im going to go over my time, i can just say i want some taking off me? are there any disadvantages for doing this?
However, in RMs world prepare for a bit of grief from the management.
Bits of advice:
Tell him as soon as you can that you wont be able to complete. Dont not use the phrase "Cut off"
Have a witness when you tell him. Your mate at next frame is OK but rep or senior postie is better.
Ask him what he wants you to do. This could be many things:
1. Leave some on the frame for someone else to do it (Up to him to arrange)
2. They may get you to stream it - if so get his guidance on what you can leave.
3. Bring back what you cant complete
4. Leave the bits you cant complete at a designated safe drop or pouch box
5. He may offer you more hours than it will take you to complete if he is desperate. (Ola Spanish Postie)
Whatever you do remember that you cannot be forced to work overtime whatever they say. Also all overtime is voluntary so if you only want to do 1/2 an hour over don't let him force you to do more. If you are willing to do more than the 3.5 delivery span but not all of the delivery, make sure he knows you are helping him out already.
Oh and your 22 and knackered I am 45 soon and I am dead after a full day.

Well I don't do overtime, though I need the cash, cos as it stands it is cheap labour for RM.
However ,the new agreement has changed the groundrules, and an opportunity does present itself.
Slowly the roadrunners are becoming aware of the implications of the changes, and gradually an informal concensus is being reached in my DO ,if you want it done on overtime it's gonna cost two hours per row.
Take it leave it

I like that a lot - it seems only fair that if you are being flexible in the time you take then they should be flexible in the offer they make - I think Belial, it is about to become a sellers market and we have what they need.BELIAL wrote:Well I don't do overtime, though I need the cash, cos as it stands it is cheap labour for RM.

Re: knackered every day nearly
I don't work on deliveries, but in a Mail Centre. But I think that there are a lot of people who are just notRage wrote:I'm 22 and as fit as anyone my age but nearly everytime i get in from work i feel knackered, i get between 8-7 hours sleep a night so maybe could do with a bit more but surely i shouldnt feel like i want to go to sleep everytime i get in from work, what kind of job is this?

physically or mentally suited to early starts.
I have worked late or middle attendances during most of my 27 years in RM. I have occasionally worked
early shifts, staring at 0600. 0700. and 0800 but apart from finding it difficult to get up on time,
I found that when I got home in the afternoon, all I could do was doze on the sofa. and was tired most
of the time.
I know that a lot of people I work with like early attendances and don't have any problems.
I wish I was like that, but I know I'm not. I would quite like to have done Deliveries, but probably would
not have lasted very long.
I do find it easier to get up early during the summer months - I usually wake naturally as it gets light.
My present middle shift suits me perfectly as I don't have to get up too early, but I finish early enough
to go out in the evening.
You might find it easier as we get into the lighter summer days, but if not and you don't adjust, perhaps
you should consider transferring to a Mail Centre and working a late shift - if that is possible.
Would warn you though that a MC late shift will seriously limit your social life.

I am usually tired and this is because of the constant lifting of bags, trays, the pushing of A frames that are not maintained. My joints always ache and I think this is what making me tired. I think it about time RM allowed us to work 37 hours a week for the same pay, I think this would make a difference.

I went back to deliverys after being in the mail centre for a very long time came off the late shift and yes it does cobble your social life up, it is a very pressure driven shift but i have settled back in deliverys have been doing my delivery for 6 years its not one of the best and it courses all kinds of problems for the management when im off, even my reserve has been taken off because its so stressfull,i know what your saying about being tired when you get in but i think you should just explain to your manager that you dont mind doing O/T but not everyday, that you would like to finish on your time you are not duty bound to work all the hours going and it is thier problem if your work load is greater than the hours you have avilable come to an agreement but make sure you have somone around when you talk to them because these managers are under pressure to get the work done on a shoe string and ware the staff to a crisp so they are not to be trusted as they go back on thier word or say they did'nt say that i do understand how you feel im the wrong side of 45 and have a home, kids, husband to look after and often dont stop until 09.30 at night so by the end of the week all i crave is to be able to just stand still for a while!

I think it's a mental thing more than anything. And some people are suited to it, some aren't.
Cardinal sin is to even sit on the sofa if you want your afternoons to mean anything. Personally when i get home i'm reasonably tired from the walk, but no biggie, i'll get a shower and changed, and go straight into town or get ready for the evenings entertainment, gig, pub whatever.
I'm relatively ne to the job, so it might come back and haunt me, but i seem to have a body clock thats flexible, after spending years cleaning windows from 5 AM till 4 in the afternoon, RM seems a doddle to me.
