Sick Pay

Apologies if I missed this, but how does the new sick pay
thing work and is it still coming in on 1st August even
if it’s a ‘no’ vote? What I am specifically asking about is
will things be reset to zero on 1st August, or for example if
I was already sick last month then I’m sick in August again,
would I not be getting paid then? Also, what happens
if you work 3 x 12 hour 20 minutes shifts instead of 5 days,
how does that work with regards to not getting paid
for the first 3 days? Thanks

The truth is nobody knows apart from Royal Mail and the union but in theory there has to be an amnesty on all previous sick for this agreement to start in August because like you say if you were sick last month and went sick again after august, they couldn’t call that a 2nd absence due to a new sick agreement just starting.

It is a great question in terms of is it a fresh start for everyone in terms of sick or as I suspect it will be treated as anyone having had a sickness absence in the previous year will not get paid when going off sick for the first 2 days of any absence from August 1st. As for anyone doing a 2 day 3 day or 4 day week just because you don't work a 5 day week has no difference to Royal Mail the first 2 days of absence will not be paid on a second absence so will result in more pay lost than those on a 5 day week

Seems a bit harsh if I have a week off sick then I won’t
get paid anything because I work a 3 day week.
Surely it should be done in hours like holiday pay? I work
Mondays but I don’t get a full day off for a bank holiday,
I get so many hours taken off my leave.

It’s the lousiest part of the deal in my opinion.

Is this new sick pay policy coming in on August 1st the same policy we were voting on? If it is why did RM agree to a vote? Would have saved a lot of money not having a vote. Is there a link to it actually going live on 1 August?

Without focusing on the stages and ill health retirement aspect of it then the new policy you will be unpaid for first few days of your second spell unwell

You will read and hear a lot about 'being paid statutory sick pay'

Statutory sick pay for the first few days is unpaid. They dont tell you THAT though.

From the second and any subsequent period of absence in a 12-month rolling period, the employee would receive the equivalent to statutory sick pay for:

• the first two days of the second absence;

• the first four days of the third absence;

• the first three days of the fourth and any subsequent

My take on that is that you would be paid by the business in line with statutory pay rates, not that you would fall under the government's rules regarding SSP.

It does require clarification though.

It’s unpaid as said above Ricky McAuley let slip that it is indeed unpaid in one of the videos when before and since they had been careful to just say “statutory”

Don’t you think this should have been cleared up before now though by the union who have continued to use that terminology?

this is the problem with the full agreement there is nothing actually sealed so we all know what it is or means , and yet the cwwho ? have put it to a vote , why if things like this hasnt been sorted ? , so regardless of the vote the company are rolling this in anyway so on August 1st does everybody sick start a fresh from that day ? or does it go back a 12 month from that date ? maybe walsh or one of the other pec can comfirm this as they endorsed it to a vote , Martin walsh give us a clue ?
