As you will know they were kept separate from the Pay and Modernisation deal - to be looked at by a 'working group'
I have no clue as to how those discussions are going.
I do know that senior union figures favour the idea of door to door becoming part of delivery ie increasing to number from three to five (or more?) but allowing time within your delivery spec to prep them etc.
This supposedly will protect full time jobs as automation starts to bite.
The obvious downside to this is that payments would be either taken away altogether or basic pay would increase across the board (slightly) to pay for it.
In my opinion this would be universally unpopular in Delivery. A guy with 700 calls getting no extra payment for Door to door?? Imagine how many would be getting dumped -it's bad enough the now.

D2D's can provide a valuable source of extra income. On my round (for 3 lots) it works out about £20-£25 per week. Being part-time this is quite a bit on top of my basic weekly wage as I now have no early shift allowance. (Following SDD it was protected for only 3 years, but no-one apart from me seemed bothered by that). I must say I detest doing them, prepping them takes 45 minutes and they can be a real pain trying to tie-up, never mind delivering them. You always seem to get 3 different sizes and 1 of them will be shiny paper. They'd be as well replacing that 1 with razor blades. If you do tie them up with the mail they are always torn and creased by the time you post them.
Anyway, having said that, they were a part of my job when I started and I accepted it when I took the job on, so they have to be done.
As they are quite a high percentage (about 10%) of my take home wage and I am forced to rely on it as I don't do OT, the union will probably double the amount we deliver, whist negotiating a new payment for them, which having seen their skills in that department will mean WE pay RM for allowing us to deliver them!

If they left D2D payments as they are and the weekly amount the same but - and here's the new idea - brought in 2 extra D2Ds that you could take 2 weeks to deliver, but till be paid for them. This has the bonus of more income for us and Royal Mail, more flexibility when they are large such as the Leather world ones I am doing this week. Thoughts everyone.

Yes makes sense that one. Depends on timescales I guess. Some D2D campaigns are time specific - ie to tie in with radio or tv campaigns but theres a lot that isn't.

Good idea in principle, but knowing RM they would give us an extra 2 every week and say we have 2 weeks to deliver them. I think if RM insisted on a consistent size for them it would cut down on prep time, make delivery easier and I would happily take more. (Of course payment would be good.)

This isn't a criticism, but I think I'd let them come with the ideas on D2D. You can be absolutely sure if it involves you getting more money then it will go down like a lead balloon. I would wait until they have the infrastructure in before agreeing to any more weight on delivery especially if it involved the use of private vehicles. Lots of people try to justify the use of their car but it isn't everyone who has a car or can drive.

Just to bring in the counter point to your argument. Surely its better if we, the lads and lasses who do the actual grunt work, come up with the ideas. At least we know where the pitfalls can be and where doing such and such wont work in fact never mind principle. I mean just look at the idea CWU and RM HQ have come up with in the past and the muddle we find ourselves in now.

The info i got from an Area delivery rep is D2Ds are on there way out as to much compensation(50million last year)is being paid out on failed contracts

I would not mind if we done 1 contract a day with payment if it safeguards full time jobs.At our AGM last year Dave Ward did say the union would agree to do more for nothing if it meant keeping full time jobs Will that happen?Who knows but i would not bet against it

Were'nt they brought in on a don't have to if you dont want to basis ?. if you start doing them over two weeks you'll soon end up having those thrust upon you on a must do every week basis ...you know how this lot works !!!

Well that is a valid point BUT how are you going to get the ideas from "the lads and lassies" which is a true reflection of the whole spectrum of deliveries on the agenda? The ideas will be put forward by RM as always and the union will get the "best deal" available - IMO they will manage to snatch defeat from victory once again.

TBH - although I no longer deliver - a shrink wrapped bundle with 5, 6, 7, items is a good idea with a standard payment as opposed to an individual payment paid to delivery officers only. That would save time for prep and the customer could chuck the whole lot in the bin in one go OR open it. The down side of course is that RM would have to manage and sustain D2D contracts. Anyone who works in a delivery office sees the so called "excess" D2Ds and I think many delivery officers will know exactly what I mean.

i think im on my own saying this but i personally like them they make up for my early shift allowance i have lost and i would willingly do more as long as i was paid a rate per each one
on my round if i have 3 i get about £29 a week for them
saying that im a rural driver in a van so i aint gotta carry em ... if i was id probably hate them just like many of the other lads

As your office has agreed to working a day for free I'm sure it won't be long before you're doing d2d for nothing.

There are 3 types of delivery member:-

1. those who do no door to door
2. those who do their own door to door
3. and those who do as many as they can get

Whatever idea or solution is put forward it will automatically p*ss 2 of those groups off.

Increasing the amount delivered cheeses off groups 1 and 2.

Removing the payment cheeses off 2 and 3.

Making everyone do their own cheeses off 1 and 3.

It surely is the poisoned chalice...
