CWU united for struggles ahead

Determination to defend public services, organise across the industry and retain pension rights were the key themes that emerged from a two-day gathering of 380 key CWU activists in Northampton this week.

The national briefing, to which all of the union’s area, divisional and branch officers were invited, was called to shape CWU strategy and tactics in response to both the government’s review of competition and Royal Mail’s proposed changes to employees’ pensions.

Throughout the event, platform speeches were interspersed with contributions from the floor, giving CWU reps from all parts of the UK the opportunity to ask questions and contribute their own views on these vital issues, while allowing the union’s national leadership to accurately guage the mood of members.

Opening day one, CWU general secretary Billy Hayes explained that Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) John Hutton had announced an official review into the impact of competition on the UK postal sector largely as a result of pressure from the union.

Former OFCOM deputy chairman Richard Hooper will head Mr Hutton’s three-member review team, which also includes Food Standards Agency chairwoman Deirdre Hutton and construction industry businessman Ian Smith.

All UK postal sector stakeholders have been invited to enter submissions - the deadline for which is March 28 – and, towards the end of the summer, Mr Hooper and his colleagues will deliver their report to Mr Hutton, who will use its findings to consider whether to amend the 2000 Postal Services Act.

Pointing out that the review had been a Labour Party election manifesto commitment, Billy Hayes stressed how damaging the introduction of competition has been, due to the distorted market conditions that industry regulator Postcomm has created.

“However, if we simply call for the restoration of the Royal Mail monopoly, that’s not feasible in the current political climate,â€

A ballot for strike action?
A close NO to strike action.
As someone said earlier, the young & the old will vote no to strike because
they dont care. This applies to the Managers union just as well as the CWU.
The tiny trickle of FT posties leaving will suddenly turn into an avalanche because
we are all so PI**ED OFF with the way RM is progressing.
RM may want PT workers but the turnover will be massive and mistakes
will cost the company millions.

Yep RM is finished, well certainly as a Full-time employer. I'm one of these people which is working on his escape. Yep Rm is finished not to mention your pension, hope your saving in other ways
