Giving customers parcels who show there driving licence ID

Post by John james »

What u guys think of this ? Like the title says

So the other day I was doing a road. The usual I park up and do a loop. Has I was delivering on foot i notice a car was driving slow then turned around parked behind my van.

Has soon has I done the loop. She comes out of her car asking she’s waiting for a parcel. I automatically know which number she is. I first say sorry I can’t give parcels on the street and I have deliver to the address. She then pulls out her driving licence ID which has her name and address. I then say I have give u your parcel has u showed me your driving licence ID. Then I say to her I will have take a pic on the PDA with your face in it for me to be on the safe side. She says that’s fine. So I tell her to smile while I take pic 😀

I would have taken a photo of the parcel next to the matching driving license ✅

You don't give mail out in the street.
The driving licence is irrelevant. We deliver to addresses not people.
We don't take pictures of people's faces.

I don't understand why you'd put yourself in this position. All she has to do is say 'I never got the parcel' to her company that sent it, for all you know it could be a phone or something expensive. RM would then check the GPS and it wouldn't be at her address.

Don't cut corners even with good intentions, I work on collections and NEVER take mail from somebody's hand, if the letter goes missing and she rings up who do you think gets the blame.

you can't show anyone's face when taking the photo, not even the photo id, it does get shown on the www
we all know you mustn't give mail in the street but we all do it when we know them, i just capture their hands/feet holding whatever, or inside their car just in case of any comebacks for denials, though still in for a caning if ever was challenged

I would say to the person who approached you "Sorry we are NOW not allowed to give items in the street even with ID, if you like I can drop it off now for you".

Stick to the rules (Item scanned at door/ picture of item with door open) the old days have gone and we have to cover our backs should there be a claim, management will conduct you otherwise.

There are scammers who try this approch too.

I tend to tell a slight white lie which is the item has to be scanned at the address otherwise it gets flagged up as the GPS doesn't match.

All the above is correct.

Saying that I do give stuff out in the street because I know my customers & their cars. Sometimes I stop them telling them I got a parcel for them & if there is someone home. Or they stop me saying they are due a parcel today. All friendly and common sense but its still against company policy.

However the reality is we are not allowed to. Plus if it needs a photo it should be scanned with the house door open.

Exactly.

Scan on doorstep so that the GPS shows it was actually delivered there. Worst case scenarios, you gave it to a IB officer or IB or a manager was watching from afar then you're out of a job.

Can't for the life of me work out why people still hand things out in the street especially in this current climate of people getting suspended or sacked for the slightest thing. Don't give them the ammo to make your working life harder.

I’m going to go against the grain - given the scenario you described (and I’ve had it occur myself when out on delivery), I would have handed the parcel over with little to no bother.

Of course it’s a judgement call, but frankly a lot of this job is about making judgement calls and evaluating risk - and there seems to be minimal risk in what you described (especially given you took reasonable extra steps).

Why make the job any harder than it needs to be? 🤷🏻‍♂️

If the OP recognised the customers car why not just include that in the photo rather than the customers face? We all know we shouldn't do it but some times it's far easier to hand the parcel over than have to explain to a disgruntled customer why she can't have her parcel.

Ah but that 'customer ' isnt the 'customer ' the sender is :Very Happy and the sender has posted to an address. Yes I know it's a shitty reply but it's what your manager might come up with as he's investigating a missing parcel

If you were 100% sure of the "customer" why noy use indoor mode, customer collected to negate the need for a photograph?
