Dupuytrens Contracture disability

Post by eastie »

Has anyone been suffering with Dupuytrens Contracture of the hand or trigger finger caused by carrying heavy parcels or bundles of mail.?
I see its classed as a disability and if you have been a Postie for more than 10 years you can claim for a workplace disability and get paid benefits for the condition.

Interesting post. Would you have to prove first that it’s been caused by the job?

I would expect that if you have the condition and you've been in the job a while any medical professional would say it's reasonable to assume that it was caused by the job. I often wondered whether the continuous clenching of mail or the continuous on/off actions on HCT breaks would lead to long term issues.

Not really as being a Postie for so long its obviously caused by holding bundles of mail , throwing off parcels daily on sorting etc.

I have dupuytrens contracture in both hands. Not sure whether you would entirely put it down to our job despite it being very manual work.In my case it is hereditary. Both my Dad and Grandmother had it.In fact Dad had his operated on in his early twenties and had both little fingers amputated.Although I have had symptoms for the last six or so years it's only in the last year that my fingers have started to bend into the palm of the hand. Going for appointment next month to see what the next step is. I consider myself lucky to have reached the late fifties given the family history. Sorry for the long diatribe but just wanted to tell my story.

By the way for anyone who is unaware of dupuytren contracture, it's due to a build up of tissue around the tendons in the hand.Over a period of time this can eventually pull the fingers over. Apparently the cause is unknown but it's more common in males. Also alcohol and tobacco also are prominent factors.Neither of which are applicable in my case !. I'll stick with the hereditary story.

It's hereditary, it came from the Viking where it was widely known so if you have Viking ancestry there's good change you'll have the gene, I learned this when I visited the Jorvik Viking centre.
