TSSA resolution to Constituency Labour Parties

Post by Big Daz »

This has been sent out to all CLP's

Good example of a affilated union being pro active rather than doing nothing and moaning.

This CLP welcomes the fact that Labour remains committed to restoring the railway to public ownership. We believe that this Party Policy can be delivered at minimal cost to the Government.
Network Rail as a not-for-profit enterprise is now providing a national strategic approach to maintenance and capacity increases that are delivering real benefits on our national rail network.
Labour is committed to further improving our railways and will continue to work to ensure that taxpayers and passengers get best value for money and greater public accountability. It is obvious, however, that these goals cannot be achieved through the privatisation model. In this respect we call on the Government and the Creating Sustainable Communities policy commission to look at how these goals can be delivered including fully examining the case for extending the Network Rail no-for-profit model to passenger train operations as franchises expire.
Polling results consistently show that this is a policy popular with the public – two thirds of all voters would like to see rail restored to public ownership and believe that this would be a vote winning policy, particularly among Labour’s core votersâ€

Bravo - pity it was too late to use the £53Bn used to prop up Northern Rock - it sure didn't take long to privatise that - mind you the MPs might have their dosh in there - maybe "private" accounts for taxi money, MPs housing benefit etc.

Its the same with agency workers, introducing better rights as voted for in parliment last week would massivley boost labour votes, but those in the labour party who form the government are seeming incapable of realising this.

Acording to the BBC there is concern within Labour MP's that the government is too pro buissness.

Hard working labour councillors across the country lose out at election times as the electorate see Labour think of the government and therefore wont vote labour at local elections.

Untill Labour lose a general election, i dont think we will see the shift to the left that is wanted by many Labour people!

Think you may be wrong on that score, Big Daz. Of the agency staff used at my office, only about 1 in 5 are British nationals, and thus able to vote at the next election. The rest are economic migrants or foreign students picking up a bit of work to supplement their income.

I know loads of people that started their working lives under a Thatcher government which was totally opposed to the introduction of a national minimum wage. You can't assume that individual people who benefit from the introduction of any particular policy will automatically then vote for the party that introduced it, out of some kind of loyalty. I would NEVER have voted for Thatcher under any circumstances !!!!

There's the rub BD you sleep with dogs and you get fleas.

At the next election all those who profess to be "leftists" will be canvassing for the Labour Party. You can't have it both ways, in order to be electable the Labour Party has to have as broad a base as possible. I am tired of apologists who deny their labour origins and announce how left wing they are only to jump on the band wagon when they are elected and that goes for local and national elections.

If these so called disaffected labourites truly believe that Labour has turned, then fight the elections under a different banner - they won't do that because not a one would be elected and that is the prize, jumping on the money band wagon.

Before the shift back to the right when they win the one after.
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!

You make an excellent point - what point in having an unelectable left wing labour party? How much input would be required in opposition and what use would it be?
