Your mates screwed, he shouldn't have had any mail in his car, so I've no sympathy for him and everyone should take note to do you job properly.

fact of the matter is the manager had no right to be in his boot and the letters were endorsed.

Doesn't matter, it means he was stealing the post because he went to the trouble of endorsing the mail but kept it in his boot and the manager asked and was granted access to the car so rights have nothing to do with it (if the manager had forced entry or even opened the boot without permission then you would have a point but permission was given).

To be safe - any mail that cannot be pouched off should be reported to the office and logged in the journal to protect the postie concerned - we are allowed to leave pouches in satchel boxes if the local TSO has closed before we finish and then report them on monday morning for the drivers to pick up when dropping the bags off. That protects us and ensures a return to the office in time for the customer to collect (p739 cards are marked 48 hours on a Saturday) Not sure that the manager has a right to inspect the car boot but as she was more or less invited to do it it's a moot point. Defence could be that it was the only secure place for the mail (which was endorsed "before returning to the office") and it wasn't unloaded from the car and taken onto the delivery officers premises. Bit of poor training here methinks. If the manager has anything about her she will counsel the lad and take it no further.

The chap involved, at most, should get a two year on record warning.

If I finidshed on a Saturday after the Delivery Office has been locked up I've had no alternative but take the 739'd mail home and bring it in first thing Monday morning. Has this lad done any different to that ?

If the office is closed then there should have been procedures in place to deal with dead mail but it still does not get away from the fact that he shouldn't be using his car for delivery.

Why would you take any mail home?

Why would you use your car as a pouch drop?

Why would you give permission to your manager to look in your car?

Again you should be taking no mail home with you and if the office is closed (which is your managers problem not yours) then it is up to the manager to arrange a secure location to leave any 739'd or dead mail if the office is closed :d'oh!

It does seem to me that a lot of DO's out there have some very poor training and a lot of bad habits

Are we talking about dead letters here? Marked gone away? If someone gave them to you why not tell them to shove them in a post box themselves - or if you're in a good mood do it yourself. It is surely basic common sense you never take any mail home.

Round our way we are allowed to put endorse mail, with or without a pouching off bag, back into the system by posting them back into a Post Box - surprised that not everyone does this as it stops incidents like this happening.

If the guy is new he may get away with it if he says he was never briefed that he cant do what he did, or that he was not briefed/trained on what to do in such situations. Mind you he would have to have started very recently to get away with that as an excuse.

We had bag checks at our place this week and as far as I no-one got caught.

We all have the right to refuse to be searched by managers. If they think you have stolen something, then they have to ask the Police to come in and search you. The managers DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SEARCH WITHOUT PERMISSION! Unfortunately, as he gave permission, the search was legal.

I don't work in deliveries myself, so I don't know your proceedures. But it seems to me, that he did the right thing. It's far from ideal, taking mail home. But at least it was secured until it could be returned to the office.

Why didn't he just take it in, as soon as he returned to work on Monday?
I'm not suggesting that anyone should start early, but at least he could have dropped it of in the building.

Its finding a screw with any decency which is the difficult bit.
The lad obviously wasn't stealing the mail. If he had been, I would think no one would ever have seen it again. It certainly would be in his car boot and endorsed. Really, this should be a two year warning as you say, but it would depend on his previous record. I've seen this at our office but the bloke concerned had a couple of years in and had a clear record.
