Missing van checks now a disciplinary matter

Bunch of people called in this morning and given warnings for not doing their PDA van checks yesterday and Saturday.... I know it's a legal requirement but if they are that fussed about it they can't then immediately tell people "ignore all the warning lights/ the fact that the mirrors are hanging off" as they did, right?

As you stated van checks are a legal obligation and down to the driver of that vehicle that responsibility. You get stopped by the police for a defective vehicle it wil be you that gets fined and points on your licence.

If you PMT1 a vehicle, simply refuse to take it out of the yard until a mechanic has cleared it, even then the responsibility is still with the driver.

Which will cause more trouble than it once would, as apparently one of RMs money saving schemes earlier this year was to not send someone to fix the vans until a certain percentage of your fleet is off the road

I saw a CWU printout at our office the other day about doing the job properly. It was good, but why aren’t the CWU “reminding” us in one of their videos about the risks drivers are taking by pretending the vans are fine?

All it takes is for the more ballsy ones to start doing it before everyone follows, perhaps it could get to the point where taking a van out that isn’t fine is seen as nearly as bad as breaking the strike.

Rather than the CWU reminding people, how about taking personal responsibility?
A motor vehicles a leathal weapon if not maintained properly.

That's great in theory, but has anyone actually been trained to do van checks? Worked with a fairly new starter, who doesn't own a vehicle and didn't have a clue, and they were told to just follow the info on the PDA. So green ticks for all, and 30 seconds later, off you go in a death trap...

Didn't they get trained during changeover? What about workplace coach or even a manager? Who told them to 'follow information on PDA'?

Did you raise it with management that the new starter needs retraining?

They must have passed a driving test so surely as some basic knowledge i.e. you don't drive a van if the thread is below the legal limit.

Have to agree with this.

Anyone who holds a valid driving licence must know how to do basic vehicle safety checks.

If you don't, you are endangering yourself and others.

I'll assume from the slightly incredulous replies that you all work in offices better managed than mine. Good to know, glad they exist in Royal Mail. I'm personally so used to an environment with zero training or assistance that it is essentially the norm.
