Labour's Catherine West says Royal Mail paid record sums to shareholders last year, but is now planning to cut 10,000 jobs while threatening the future of the minimum six-days-a-week letter delivery service. Why won’t the government investigate the "mismanagement of this iconic service"?

Sunak praises the "hard work" of postal workers. But their strikes are wrong and their pay demands unaffordable, he adds.


So basically he won't investigate but says unaffordable!

Hardly hilarious as Royal Mail since privatisation pays no corporation tax.

Also being a former monopoly, if Royal Mail fails to make a profit the tax payer steps into the frame and pays 10% above its operating costs.

The tax payer will probably end up with the unprofitable bit of the business once it has been broken up. No matter what some people say there will always be letters and magazines. I can't even imagine the number of job losses in the publishing world if their magazines, papers, journals, periodicals etc could not be delivered. I don't think even this Tory shower would let that happen. Imagine Lord Snooty without his monthly Fox and Hounds. Absolute shower don't yer know.

This is maybe where it's heading. It's hard to tell, but Thompson claiming 'we are a parcel business now' when we still deliver a ridiculous amount of letters, Thompson wanting tens of thousands of job losses - we won't be able to deliver the service..... is he just going to make a complete mess of the company by providing a diabolical postal service so the government take it off him and meanwhile he can have his owner-driver parcel courier....

I hope so, I hope the government take the letters service off him and then start up a parcels service too which ends up putting Thompson's International Noob deliveries company out of business.

I'll deliver the service for the public.

Thompson’s own projections pointed to a £300 million profit if changes went through - back in March / April

However, I think he was also banking on the test kit income lasting longer.

£100 million of capital expenditure (loads more to go through next reporting year) and £50 million Ofcom fine + £50 million for the management redundancies were always going to make this year tough.

Yet July’s dividend was still paid? There’s an argument to say that money should have been retained.

Another thing is.... he's upping the minimum wage by 10%.... but he doesn't think we should get the same. I mean I'd be happy with 8% with no significant changes.

Perhaps the mismanagement of the economy and it's policy ie the mini budget cause the pound to fall and they hike interest rates?
Also the fact that the big oil and gas producers have private ownership and can dictate the price we pay while avoiding tax!
