LTB 458/22 – ROYAL MAIL GROUP: CWU PROPOSAL TO RMG TO RESOLVE THE PAY & CHANGE DISPUTES
No. 458/22 ERRATA

21st November 2022

TO: ALL POSTAL BRANCHES

Dear Colleague

ROYAL MAIL GROUP: CWU PROPOSAL TO RMG TO RESOLVE THE PAY & CHANGE DISPUTES

Branches are advised a meeting was held with Royal Mail and Acas on Saturday, during which we were presented with three separate proposals for Royal Mail, Parcelforce and Fleet. The proposals were totally unacceptable and as such were unanimously rejected by the Postal Executive on Sunday.

The CWU has now tabled the attached proposal, also unanimously endorsed by our Postal Executive, which has been sent to RMG today.

CWU remains committed to serious negotiations with RMG and a further meeting will be held at Acas later today.

Further developments will be provided at the earliest opportunity.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward Andy Furey
General Secretary Acting Deputy General Secretary (Postal)

This should have gone in before the first strikes in August.

Unfortunately that ship has sailed and submitting It now after many of the proposals have already been undermined by executive action just means it reads as an incredibly naive wish list which only serves to show the chasm between both sides and further deflate an increasingly nervous membership.

I think the PEC have completely lost direction and focus, it's pretty obvious some of them are living on past glories and are refusing to remove their heads from the sand long enough to see the reality of the situation.

Are they prepared to sacrifice the membership in order to save face?
How high will they pile the bodies?

The only legitimate reason for strike action is to force an acceptable resolution. At this late stage in the game that resolution has to be in touching distance, it has to be tangible. You cannot under any circumstances use strike action and members finances to punish the employer for not wanting an agreement... to save face.

I'll ask Martin an open and poison free question.
Is a resolution close Martin?

"4. A New Strategy to Diversify the Business and Expand the Role of Postal
Workers
 This must build on the strategy agreed in the Pathway to Change Agreement
and should be seen as an alternative to abandoning the a.m Delivery period.
 RMG will invest in a project with CWU to diversify and grow the business
beyond letters and parcels, exploring new commercial markets, supporting
communities, driving local and regional business growth, introducing new
local-to-local services and acting as an advocate for environmental change.
 We will also jointly approach the Government, Metro Mayors and local
Councils with a plan to put RMG and its workforce at the centre of community
wealth building projects and approaches to assist the UK economic recovery
and levelling up agenda.
 The above approach will focus on how we can utilise Royal Mail’s competitive
advantage in its unique reach in delivering daily to 32 million addresses and
the special relationship that employees have with customers on the doorstep.
 The plan will also focus on how we can use Royal Mail’s existing
infrastructure, including Mail Centres, to support new revenue streams.
 CWU are ready to meet the RMG Board and present the above as part of an
alternative business plan. CWU also has a coalition of partners ready to
support this approach."

If this really is the full extent of their "alternative business plan" it's little wonder they've been too embarrassed to tell members about it. It's the same wishy washy nebulous mess they teased it as. There is no business plan in any of that. Nothing of substance. No specific products to generate revenue. Hollow ESG buzzwords and no actual plan. Why on earth would the company accept that as an alternative to their own?

Sure, we'll solve the company's financial problems by having posties "advocating for environmental change". That'll surely pay our wages. :nana

Although some of the proposal seems very logic and in fact should have been mentioned a long time ago.
At this stage if Simon wants to really resolve it should get together with cwu and come up with some sort of compromise. All of that have absolutely no chance for acceptance. At the same time if he refuses all of that and wants to press on with his agenda you can't blame cwu for calling the strikes
.
Timing of all of that is very bad in my opinion. We will see if management really wants this thing to resolve or they already have discarded this year and are going to go ahead with what they planned knowing that they will eventually turn losses into profits.

Straight in Thompsons shredder this morning that went. I’m embarrassed for the union and it’s no surprise it took them months to put this out. Once again shambolic from Ward and his band of master strategists.

That does't look like a bad set of proposals to me tbh.

It's quite intransigent and broad-brush, but that's where negotation comes in.

I can see a middle way between that and Thompson's madness, if only RM would get serious about talking and / or get rid of that sociopathic failure "Si".

Agreed. These proposals are the complete opposite of what RM want.

I’m guessing the unions stance is hoping we can meet somewhere in the middle?
“Shorts,in this weather?!”

“If they’re bills I don’t want ‘em!”

“What’s she been ordering now?”
