Thompson - New agreement sent to CWU

Team - time to update you on where we are with the talks - I have just finished a call with the CWU facilitated by ACAS - we have now given the CWU a written agreement - that in our view is very good, and includes a number of new elements that are very positive - CWU now need to read it, and reflect on it...

They must let us know on Monday whether they can accept it - or not - my team will be with them on Monday to discuss again - face to face.

But I want to be very clear - on the next day of strike action - we will stop talking.

As I said on last weeks results call - our preference, my preference is to have an agreement with the CWU so they can stand alongside us - to turn Royal Mail around.

And this is the key point - what we need to see is a behaviour change.

To be honest, the CWU are in a no win position. If they reject this deal, all we'll get if we strike over Black Friday / XMAS is more redundancies, and a worse outcome.

Unfortunately, a s**t deal is the best they can do now, the company don't care. They have their agenda, and they're going to do it, with our without the Union.

The Union have a role, to get the best possible deal out of an employer, and present that to the members. I'd even go as far as to say, I'd apply pressure to the CWU to put the deal to members, by saying It's unlikely I'll support more strike action.

The Union have an impossible job. They'll never please everyone. Some familes are at their wits end how they are going to pay bills this month and other postman will have to cancel fishing trips on Friday.

I am willing to be positive for the next 5 days.

The CWU said they were making progress in the meetings and a lot of it sounded fairly promising based on the youtube/ facebook live.

But this positivity from me could easily flip to doom and gloom.

I am ok with some change as long as the pay is ok. Maybe the change comes in and I hate it - fine - I'll move on within a year or 2.

STATEMENT TO ROYAL MAIL GROUP MEMBERS
We have met the CEO and Royal Mail Group this morning via ACAS and they have presented us with documents which we simply cannot agree to.
The CWU is willing to continue talking and we have agreed to present alternative proposals on Monday at ACAS.
The CEO has told us he has a Board meeting at 5pm on Monday and that this is effectively his deadline for negotiations to conclude. We have made it clear we are available for negotiations right up until the strike action on Thursday.
We will hold a meeting of every CWU representative in the UK at 5:30pm on Monday.
National Gate Meeting Day will take place on Tuesday.
We will hold a CWU Live event on Wednesday.
You will all recognise this is a pivotal moment. Whilst we are doing everything possible to reach an agreement, the absolute focus of every member and representative must be on delivering next week’s strike action.
