Been asked today to consider going to 4 ten hour shifts per week with a longer delivery span than 3.5 hours, i know its against cwu advice but rep is pushing agenda as it gets all p/timers up to f/time with some senior men getting e.v.r is there any other offices doing ten hour shifts out there, would like to here if any and how do they work.

5 day long weekend every 3 weeks GREAT

to get the extra 2 hours work per day : split up the town walks onto the rurals ( every rural gets 1 hour extra town walk ) extra prep time plus extra 10 min break plus extra ips time as there is less staff in the office each day makes this upto 2hours.

bit of a along day but the extra time off makes up for this

Nothing happened in my area yet, but I like the idea of more days off in return for longer shifts. By doing this BOTH the business benefits AND your own social/family life! I think it's about time that Royal Mail did something which helps employee's rather than just taking the MICKY MOUSE all the time!!!

Like the idea of a long weekend every third week but not sure my guys would go for 10 hour Saturdays, not to mention a 4 hour delivery which would be hard going.
Interested to hear from offices who have this system right now though.

I'm surprised any RM manager can actually maintain a system that complicated - ours have a job managing a rolling day off and holidays - they don't appear to know someone is missing til they don't turn up for the shift.

Dont understand how this works. We start at 6.15am to 2.15pm. Our town deliveries are 3.5 hours but our rurals are 4.5 hours. If we worked longer then it would take us past the 3pm time limit. We are already struggling some days as it is without working longer.

The older i get the less i understand people. One minuet they moan about doing extra work the next they are champing at the bit to do a 4 hour walk. Carry on my lucky lads and walk yourself to an early grave.

NO, NO , NO, to longer deliverys, if you want ten hour shifts fine but once you go down the longer deliverys route where does it end, 5 hour 6 hour

I don't understand, longer deliveries no way I am knackered after my delivery, What became of the union campaign for a 35hr week?

I'm a fairly fit 40 odd year old, can manage it for a year or two more, but what of our 50+ colleagues, who aren't as fast as they were, being asked to do this AND no longer retire at 60. Another five years for you, pal, on a 10 hour shift.

RM would love to increase the delivery span but to do so will cause many older staff to pack the job in. Think carefully, as any increase in delivery span should be resisted at all costs.

Surely a vote would be needed within your office? One about this longer delivery span and one for a new rep????

Shouldn't there be a study done by the CWU/RM on the implications for the health of delivery staff before any increases are allowed. How many of us have had trouble with back/shoulders/joints etc since the introduction of SDD, not to mention the INCREASE in mail volumes that (I hear) RM have finally admitted to. Personally, I think 3.5 hours is too long, especially with no toilet stops. nowhere to rest or take refreshment. 4, 5 or 6 hours, you're having a laugh. I hope.

Seriously, any increase in the delivery span will finish of loads of posties, both F/T & P/T, yes you might get an extra day off, or 5 day weekend every three weeks, but you'll be a physical wreck, and what about O/T? Who's going to be fit enough to do it? This job is hard enough as it is without doing even more. If we go for this, then we will be working ourselves into an early grave.

Just realised that I've almost directly quoted some posts from above, at least I'm not alone in my thinking then.

this is crazy wanting 10hour days and 4 hour deliveries,royal mail will go for this and next year they will attempt to give everybody 4 hour walks.
why cant some people see that with royal mail nothing is done for our benefit but for their's
