What can RM do if we just say no?

Post by Jen1 »

So where do we stand if they try to implement later start and finishing times and working Sundays if we just ignore them and all come in and finish at the times we currently do?

If the union agrees to this and we all do it what can Royal Mail do?

Can they sack us all? I mean it’s a change of contract that we haven’t agreed to so where do we stand?

Can the union get a solicitor to look into it as an option?

We will get a vote on any agreement, if you don’t like it vote against it.

The OP knows We can say no. What He is asking is what can RM do about it if We do?

The obvious answer is RM will issue an ultimatum saying as from tomorrow adhere to the new times or consider that you've sacked yourself.
Were that to happen RM would then take the opportunity to alter the T&C's to exactly how they want them for the whole workforce and with no union input or influence.
A classic own goal on the CWU's part if they were to endorse that action.

I don’t think they’ll implement anything just yet while the talks are taking place. If they breakdown without agreement that will be different. It would depend how far apart they were and if there’s any scope for carrying on talking.Ultimately We will get a vote on it but generally in all the years I’ve been here when the union advice you to tick yes that’s it.

This is probably RM's goal, to push everything through via the back door without a (watered down) deal

RM realise that all 115,000 staff aren't going to walk out the door over it. People have commitments and need a steady income.
I'd be surprised if even a tenth of that number didn't tow the line.

I'm sure, some time in the dim and distant past we voted NO to a negotiated agreement put to us in a vote, despite being advised by the CWU to vote YES, think they, the union were shocked, listened to the members, went back to RM fudged the terms slightly and it got through on second vote. Hopefully somebody with a better memory than me can remember more details. I am getting old and I could well have dreamt it

I said generally but you could be right. Wasn’t that over 20 years ago now.

How is it a ‘classic own goal?’

What,in your opinion,could/should the CWU have done different with regards to this dispute & protecting the workforce?

I meant it would be a classic own goal if the CWU were to endorse or be in any way involved in the (rhetorical) campaign for staff to keep on working to their existing times.
