One of my old reps is friends with a couple of bully's who mentally and verbally tortured me, ended up having to extricate myself and move to another DO, lost shed loads of OT, but I don't dread going in, or wanting to kill myself on a daily basis.

You do help in many ways, you can change peoples lives for the better.
But remember, you cannot please all the people all the time.
Give it 6 months & see what you think.

Maybe the union should restructure itself and lose the highly paid execs. Pay local reps instead. The union would be stronger for that and have real local meaning.

If you are any good you will be able to help people.
It takes time to become good at the role. You will also need support from your Branch and Area Rep.
But give it a go. Why not?
There really is power in a union.
