Working after strike days
Colleagues in my office are working overtime by way of going over their time and working rest days after strike days which is making me isolated when I ask them what’s the point of striking? is this the case in your offices and am I right do you think bearing in mind the financial difficulties they are facing?

Re: Working after strike days
Totally agree mate, People will be coming in early today and working over to clear the backlog. All it's proving to me is that 6 days of Mail can be cleared in 5, which is what they want.

Re: Working after strike days
Same here. There's a scramble for as much overtime as they can get. The office will be clear by tomorrow just by spending a few hundred quid on overtime, the office saves 20 or 30 times that amount by us being unpaid for yesterdaygeordieboy123 wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 06:11Colleagues in my office are working overtime by way of going over their time and working rest days after strike days which is making me isolated when I ask them what’s the point of striking? is this the case in your offices and am I right do you think bearing in mind the financial difficulties they are facing?

Get over it , people need the money in a cost of living crisis, there is no work to rule or overtime ban in place , as long as they are not crossing picket lines they are doing nothing wrong and remember this is extra money the company are having to pay out which they don’t want to be doing.

Re: Working after strike days
I think there is definitely a disconnect between those who are comfortable financially and those who basically live pay check to pay check.
Im in a very lucky situation financially but i know people close to me who are not only already in debt, but also scraping by week to week barely covering all their bills and costs.
You can get to a point where you dont have any option but to work overtime, you simply need that money in order to just survive and keep scrambling on through life.

Re: Working after strike days
We have been told from this week, no more working our days off and no overtime allowed on the day after a strike.
Great when you're having to lapse 2 or 3 rounds between 5 or 6 duties due to long term illness.

That’s managements problem
Work your hours and go home
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Re: Working after strike days
I take it this is coming from your manager? Because as far as I've heard there is NO Overtime Ban countrywide, from either RM or CWU.
He obviously thinks he'll take a leaf from ST's, "Little Book of Bullying"!
Are you getting paid OT for taking out those Lapsed Duties? You're obviously not going to be so light on work that you can do them within your contracted hours. In theory if he's saying, "NO Overtime" than he can't expect you to take out lapsing?
Like all Wage Slaves, he had two crosses to bear: The people he worked for and the people he worked with! (Stephen Vizinczey.)

Re: Working after strike days
It's been discussed before ... But the Strikes have not really been organised to build up a backlog of mail. They're intended to build up Pressure on the Management to get back to the Negotiating table, either directly ... by causing them Financial loses, or indirectly ... by having Customers threatening to take their Business elsewhere or being written to by MPs and Businesss Organisations.geordieboy123 wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 06:11Colleagues in my office are working overtime by way of going over their time and working rest days after strike days which is making me isolated when I ask them what’s the point of striking? is this the case in your offices and am I right do you think bearing in mind the financial difficulties they are facing?
There is an argument that as members have lost a days pay to support these strikes, they should take the opportunity to work overtime (which is costing RM more money) to claw back some of that loss.
This does have the added advantage that if members can claw back those "Lost" wages they'll be able to support future strikes, for much longer, instead of being forced back to work due to Financial Pressure.

Re: Working after strike days
The rolling strikes will cause the most disruption if they happen.
Right now if people are clawing dough back to cover losses you have to accept that it is a nessecity for many.
We are out because our basic wage is no longer sufficient. People need the basic just to make ends meet.
This is the problem.
When the rolling strikes start the system will be so clogged that the work will not be at DOs to clear. It will all fall apart.
Until then do what you have to do.
I haven't been doing any overtime recently through personal choice but I haven't got much savings left to be honest. However I am struggling to grasp the concept of reigning it in.
Allot do not have the luxuries of savings.

So bloody what?geordieboy123 wrote: ↑21 Oct 2022, 06:11Colleagues in my office are working overtime by way of going over their time and working rest days after strike days which is making me isolated when I ask them what’s the point of striking? is this the case in your offices and am I right do you think bearing in mind the financial difficulties they are facing?
They have supported the strike by not working or crossing a picket line on a strike day, which is what the union wants and rightly so.
If they are doing overtime afterwards - does it affect YOU personally in any way? That's the trouble with so many, always worrying themselves silly about what everyone else is doing. You will never know, but they may be in dire financial difficulties, hence the need to do overtime but still feeling the need to support the industrial action. It's a fine balance.
"he's got an hour extra than me", why has she been asked to work their day off?", "he hasn't taken his break", "so and so hasn't done their van checks", "look at the missorts they've brought back", and so on and so on.
Worry about what YOU are doing, and let those in the relevant positions worry about others.
