Vacant duties - should they go up for picking?

Post by norris9 »

When someone who is signed to a duty vacates that duty, is there a procedure in place where that duty should go up for signing within a set period of time?

We have duties that were vacated years ago and never put up for signing, instead new starts have come in and been kept on them. Many of these duties are much more desirable than the ones people are signed to...

Management have been claiming for months that all unsigned for jobs would be going up for signing, but have not followed through.

What can I do to push them into getting on with it?

I don't know where I've got this from (rumour, office chat or if it's an official rule) but I've got the impression that a duty
can be vacant for six months before it has to be advertised. I would imagine that in the current situation
that if you approach management they will say wait until the unagreed revisions have been done then 'we'll see'.

Also AFAIK if someone has left a duty because they are long term sick the duty can be 'vacant' for a long time
until they come back to work or finally leave the business on IHR - so someone can be long term sick for year(s)
and nobody has the duty but until they have left the business only then the six months kicks in. Gives management
plenty of opportunity for lapsing.

Stand to be corrected on any of the above by more experienced colleagues!

Of course when the duties are advertised the previous comments re seniority apply.

You are correct, six months or once 5% of duties are vacant.
