Spin to win
So this is the biggest dispute we have faced for years.
Seems both parties are not willing to give an inch.
How do the union and the business come out of this whilst saving face?

Re: Spin to win
Who cares about saving face? We had two ballots, one we have already lost. We had a ballot calling for a no strings pay rise. The union are now talking about two year deals with strings. That was the easy one.
As for the change ballot, he ain't budging. If these rolling strikes don't move him or force him out we lose.

They have to come out of this claiming they got a good deal

Re: Spin to win
I don't think saving face will satisfy many of us, the war cry was for a no strings payrise, we have lost that one, If we accept any changes we have lost and we will accept change.
I have been around long enough to know there are never any winners. It is always compromise.

I have also been around for many years (33)
I know how successful the union has been over the years.
The way forward was slated at the time yet now it seems like a really good agreement.
There has to be compromise, the unions job is to get the best deal it can for it's members as part of that compromise.
That's so difficult when the business doesn't seem willing to negotiate and seems intent on destroying the union

The union is destroying itself. Why make a legally binding agreement (referring to Agenda for Growth) that has a breakaway clause over industrial action giving the company a get out of jail free card. It wasn't worth the paper it was written on.the beautiful bd south wrote: ↑23 Oct 2022, 21:35That's so difficult when the business doesn't seem willing to negotiate and seems intent on destroying the union![]()
The strategy they've employed so far in the strikes I feel has been too meek as well, we could have gone out for a week at the start and shown the company we were serious.
A week would have generated far more media attention, and put pressure on the company to resolve it.
As it is these 1 or 2 day strikes do little.

Re: Spin to win
Maybe a full week of strike action or the threat of one is the answer as hard as it would be for most if not everyone the Liverpool dock workers are out on a 2 week strike they were offered 10% which is far more than we were offered I'm hoping tomorrow's strike and the upcoming rolling dates in November will achieve something because if not I believe it won't end well for us

Re: Spin to win
Unless the union get some really good concessions on the final deal it’s all been a bit pointless. I know it’s been more about terms and conditions than the pay but most of us have already lost hundreds of pounds so the money needs to compensate too.

Re: Spin to win
All part of Thompson’s and the boards plans, starve us back. The union need to play a smart long game, a week all out would be a bad move, I think they currently have the balance about right, not everyone will agree. Maybe announce some more dates into December is talks don’t lead anywhere by the end of this week.

Re: Spin to win
Pretty sure Thompson is happy with the prospect of the business grinding to a halt over the next month.
He'll be thinking that public opinion will sway towards the business and against the posties. He'll then announce further cuts and redundancies due to the state of the finances.
The last thing he wants is this firm to return to 'normal'. He's forcing through change regardless of the collateral damage

Do you really think Thompson cares about public opinion ?POSTPERSON50 wrote: ↑24 Oct 2022, 11:46Pretty sure Thompson is happy with the prospect of the business grinding to a halt over the next month.

I think he's power crazy. He loves the notoriety. He loves the idea of the public being rattled by the consequences of his 'leadership' of this firm, and he will love nothing more than the CWU and it's members being blamed by the public for this sh*t we are in.chickenwittle wrote: ↑24 Oct 2022, 12:04Do you really think Thompson cares about public opinion ?POSTPERSON50 wrote: ↑24 Oct 2022, 11:46Pretty sure Thompson is happy with the prospect of the business grinding to a halt over the next month.
