Zareena 'What a way to make a living ' Brown : The Peeps Officer

So, in terms of what we're not proposing, and clearly, again, it's one of the items that we want to talk through withThe CWU, get their input because we know that the solution we come out with will be much stronger as a result of that.

But what I can say is you know there isn't an intent to have annualised hours in terms of a short notice asking people to you know significantly change the hours that they work.

This is more about if you think about, um, you know, whether it's seasonally, for example, summer vs winter, we do have a change in the workload and you'll see that and experience that but actually what we have is you know we're quite fixed in terms of the hours that we have.

So what that means is you know we're not able to flex up and down. now, as we think about our competitors, you know many of them pay per parcel, for example, so they don't quite have the same challenge and we've been really clear as we've talked about that, we want to maintain you know the the best terms and conditions, the best pay and benefits in the industry.

So from that point of view, you know that that we don't have that flexibility and to a large extent, you know we invest in our people and we invest in our paying benefits, so we've got to be able to have greater flexibility going forward.

But clearly what we want to be able to do is for people to be able to plan ahead to be able to continue to work in a way that works for them.

So we're going to have to get that balance right of increasing our flexibility in a sensible way, but absolutely being able to do that in a way that is plentiful.

We talked a little bit about you know different duty patterns. so i think there are a number of things that we can do. that will be helpful in terms of our flexibility being able to work for individuals.

But you know the message I'd like you to take away is our intent is to increase our flexibility. but do that in a way that you know can work as best for everybody, whether that's people that, you know, have child care or other care caring commitments that they have. so again, I come back to that word of balance between those two things.

Sounds like this one is easy to defeat if brought in. If your on a 30 hour contract work 6 hours a day, or at least the whole 30 hours within the week.

I presume, during the summer months they will be desperate for us to amass hours for Xmas. Won’t be difficult for them to move your start time forward & finish time back by one hour. Over five days they will have ‘banked’ 10 hours towards the pressure period. I guess this is their idea of flexible working?

Not what I want BTW. This way of working will be horrific for us all

One of the major problems I have with this, is that it will require a level of basic competence from RM to implement effectively and fairly. So, um, you know, err, see, like that’s why, like, you know, um, yes.

ITs like they think in the summer there is nothing to do.
My last two summers were the equivalent of Christmas pressure the previous years.
So, um, figure that one out.

The change in the workload between winter and summer is why Royal Mail introduced lapsing several years ago. It was initially supposed to be for a few months of summer but now we seem to be lapsing all year round and that is even though packet volumes have gone through the roof.

We also have long and short days as well all in the interests of flexibility for the Royal Mail

This is one of those things that the mischievous side of you would like to see them trying to introduce.

I'm assuming it's "off peak" now.

What they really want is zero hour contracts and then use people for however long they need them for. But they don't want to admit that, so this is their fart arsed way of doing something similar. Pay someone a fixed amount but have them work whatever hours are needed, and then "owe" unworked hours for when the company want them to be used. As they want to trash the USO I can see you being told to leave mail in order to finish early at quieter times because they will want as many hours as possible banked for the busier periods.

Don't forget that everyone is supposed to be on a 35 hour week now as part of the last pay deal.

They will harass people,as they do now in some offices by all accounts - to finish. Weaker posties,as they do now, will work for free.

Worst case scenario (for RM) - you fetch stuff back,as long as that doesn’t include SD’s or tracked, will they really care?

Yup. SD’s & tracked will be the priority, the rest can be left. Banking hours for Xmas will be another target set to managers by those up above
