Hi, I'm Jasmine I'm here today (reading from a script) to speak with Ricky McAuley about the latest on the Union discussions. So Let's Begin by touching on the media coverage this week the company is obviously in a very serious position, isn't it?

Well, we have said for some time that we are losing a million pounds a day and there are two things impacting the company at the moment, the 1st is a very very challenging economic environment caused by multiple factors that were having to respond to and the second is the business has been damaged by the industrial action we've seen so far and the £200m of Lost revenue this year. But it is both factors that are having an impact and what can people do about it, it's what we've been trying to do back in October away started the process of revision activity in the operation to right size operation to the revised level of workload, that's how we stop losing a million pound a day and clearly, alongside that we're trying to land a pay and change you for our people that very much at the heart of it is got equally how to respond to that trading position and do the right things for our customer's that will help the business grow in the long term with that growth that will deliver job security for everybody in the organisation.

It's been difficult for everyone it's probably the most difficult bitter dispute that any of us have been involved in, I say that for the trade union as well as it's not been easy for the trade union that are striving to get the best deal for the members that's the role of the trade at the trade union and for all of our employees that are looking for pay and alongside that looking for long-term job security and in the recent talks we have started to make some progress we've moved closer together on certain issues.


But we really do need to secure the change to our network that make sure we can be brilliant for our customers in the long term and it is that that will generate the turnaround trading performance and with that the ability to release pay to our people and grow in the long term with that the job security that clearly is so important to everyone.

And so let's bring it back to why we're looking to make the changes that go alongside the deal.

I think it's worth going right back to the start because whether we have explained it well enough or not, let me go over it again so some of the changes to our network and ways of working, being less dependent on air transportation, people in the delivery officesup and down the country probably don't see what the problem is everyday, cause the mail arrives in the delivery what they don't see over lengthy periods at Christmas is the volume we can't get on the air network for next-day delivery what they probably can't see the growth on next day parcels, parcel consiments,boxes that are getting bigger and bigger and bigger and trying to connect through air transportation overnight which is an hour flight sector vs moving it through a mode of transport that's a better quality service low CO2 and our customer's increasingly saying show CO2 poor parcel and lower unit cost is to not to move it through the air over night with all the downsides on liability high CO2 quality, is to move it through road rail based network. unfortunately, that means the parcels and letters did they want to continue to deliver together in the main arrived later.

So we're not doing it to be difficult or to Discrupt people's lives but doing it because we know we can and historically have not been able to serve our customers in a way that satisfies them that allows us to secure the growth in the market and compete head-on with some of the other carriers in the UK and none of which use air transportation they have better reliability than us they have got lower costs than us and with that main network change which has been one of the biggest concerns of colleagues which I do understand, we need to get that change, if we don't get that changed we will be misleading people in terms of long-term job security cause we are not going to have a network that we can grow based on air transportation it could be the parcels getting bigger all the time, there's limited suppliers even want to transport overnight and it's not the best solution for our customer's

So how about revisions what's the latest?

These revisions that we've been trying to progress with the CWU since October and we want to do the agreement we have been working on that for almost six months now trying to persevere to get an agreement, we can't wait any longer it's the one way of turning the fortune of the company around and I think we've got another 184 delivery revisions to deploy another 12 mail center revision to be agreed and deployed we will be looking to do that over the month of April because we must, and just on this topic I do want to say a huge thank you, there's hundreds of units in the country that have taken significant steps and productivity they have realigned to the workload they're clearing every day and delivering great quality for the customers we need every unit to do that, and I understand we've been in dispute, that's just not realistic our future depends on our ability to take the cost line down in response to the workload decline we've seen otherwise will continue to have the issue of a million-pound a day as one of the key parts of the plan and a huge thanks to everybody that's making that work locally and the local managers need the support and cooperation of the team locally to make those revisions a success and I think it's important to recognise whilst we have some challenges we've also got some brilliant examples of when people do pull together that Royal Mail can be it's absolute best

It is interesting he mentions the difficulty with air freight and parcels.

At one time Parcel Force handled parcels, tracked are getting larger and heavier delivery staff are now expected to deliver.

Furthermore,

Royal Mail no longer has ts own aircraft to transport the mail each day since switching to road transport.

Though air freight is still in operation, they have to lease cargo space on privately operated cargo planes each day. You can only have so many take off and landing slots each night after leaving the Mail Centre.

Firstly, thought so.

Secondly, of course they have lower costs, they’re only a fraction of our size, delivering a fraction of the amount we do, while paying their employees less than us

Well ours is. Despite being understaffed too. We were informed that we were in the top 20 offices in the country recently. That will all change when our revision kicks in next month as the changes are not achievable.

Just noticed above post, ours also was, well almost every day until our revision kicked in, now it doesn't unless people work their days off,part timers get paid to start early and they get a few extra early sorters in, so basically I'd reckon it costs more than before so in effect they've saved f**k all.

Any office that is clearing can only be small and have people that do overtime to clear.

I am not completing 60% of the time and we haven't had our revision yet. The revision will obviously make things worse. Meanwhile Door2Doors are weeks behind.

We have no day off cover, we have no annual leave cover. At least 1 day a week each walk will not go out at all apart from the tracked which are prioritised.

For our office....

Saturday's used to be a breeze, delivering to every 4th house on average, so going to 25% of the houses on the round. These days we are delivering to 70%+ of the houses on the round every Saturday.

I swear mail has gone up in our office.
