What are these jobs with similar pay? I'm always checking job sites in my area but never see anything less demanding (unskilled) for the same pay.

BTW I'm not being argumentative, I truly want to know the answer to this so I can maybe hone my search terms!

It probably depends what you're comparing. In my area I can see many "unskilled" jobs, advertised for around the 10 quid an hour mark. The starting wage at Royal Mail is £10.85. So for a new start that hates RM, I can see them making the "I can earn about the same much easier elsewhere" comparison.

As we know, with the delivery supplement, and the increase after 12 months. It works out around the 13 quid an hour mark. There's not that many comparable jobs, that pay as well as Royal Mail.

And I think, that's why some people feel a bit trapped in Royal Mail at times. They know it's better than comparable jobs elsewhere, but it's also an increasingly frustrating place to work at times. There's also the "skill up" quandry to consider, oftentimes you might be able to start on a lower wage, and get training in another job, only to find after a couple of years training you finish on around the same pay as you currently get. I find that Royal Mail pay is quite often comparable with "semi-skilled" positions (you know jobs that would take more than a few weeks training).

When you're comparing pay you have to factor in the overtime rate and the fact that in a less physically demanding job you're probably going to be able to do more of it.

Also there's my chiropractor bill and my reiki massage therapist to pay, then there's my psychologist and my spirit guide all trying to heal my mind and body from this s**t show of a job, it all costs.

Also the hard drugs...

After the revision i am now covering even more ground and am knackered every day, cost of everything is going up yet our wages stay the same. The gap between minimum wage and royal mail wage getting smaller,we need an actual hourly increase rise not a so called equivalent pay rise by reducing the working week. :arrrghhh

Isn't £10.85 18 year old starter pay? If you're like mid 20s it's closer to £13/hr. There's ZERO unskilled jobs in Stoke that pay £13/hr for anyone who's like 25 and above.

Don't forget much better pension contributions from RM than most comparable employers. The pay for an unskilled job really isn't bad. The scandal is how many years people have to work before having any chance of a full-time contract.

Also that 10.85 doesn't include the delivery supplement. So actual pay for 18+ incl del supp is:

At entry: 11.57
6 mths: 12.17
12 mths: 12.77

Then as schiff correctly states you get the RM pension contribution (as well as tax relief).

Doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome an increase but in any comparison conversation or negotiation about pay
we should be armed with the correct info.

Wouldn’t a further reduction in the working week mean you cover less ground and are less knackered, you post kind of contradicts itself.

No - it means you will be given less time to do the same amount of indoor work with exactly the same amount of outdoor work.
If not more.

To be fair, I literally said in the original post, that we know it's closer to 13 quid after 12 months while factoring in the Delivery supplement.

My entire point was... a new start that is struggling with the job, might be comparing the basic entry rate, against the job they are leaving for.
