I believe the compulsory redundancy issue hinges on the fact that RM want to rationalise and reduce the mail centres and possibly DOs and may not be able to relocate all the surplus staff. Over subscribed VR in local offices does not mean everybody who wishes to leave can do so, RM nationally would like to reduce the headcount but some Mail centre closures would mean compulsory redundancies are inevitable if the staff cannot be accommodated, unwilling or unable to work elsewhere.

How are we ever going to defeat that issue as RM aren't going to keep MC's open just because we threaten to strike? Surely a better proposal would be decent CR terms?

Wasn't this always going to be an issue when RM spent £m's on the automated parcel hubs? Were the CWU asleep at the wheel when they were proposed?

Am I missing something or don't we actually need mail centres anymore?

As it stands at the moment there is still a need for Mail Centres.
In 18 months time that will probably all change for those north of Watford.

I would presume that most if not all Mail Centres will remain for the foreseeable future, though not as they currently are.
How many DO's will be able to take an artic to bring their mail in daily?

Until they relocate most of the DO's then the status quo will remain.
Mail will still arrive at Mail Centres only to be cross docked (Inward and Outward).

I can't see the USO being weakened that far. Postmen are seen as key workers for a reason - a postal service keeps the country connected, keeps the country moving, keeps the country's businesses and services going. In a time of emergency - like the pandemic we have that connection to every household in the country.

I doubt the government will let Royal Mail go down to a 5 day service anytime soon. Although I think it would make sense for the company and probably wouldn't impact external businesses/services too much, but I have read articles where some companies - magazine publishers in particular - aren't happy with the idea.

Key workers has been proved to be a patronising and now meaningless term. At the time the definition was quoted as "the ones you depend on when the s**t hits the fan" and the treatment of a lot of key workers since then has been worse than it was before.

The company don't give a s**t at the moment and I can't see that attitude changing, and OFCOM don't seem that bothered. The USO hasn't existed in reality for a few years and is just ignored now.

3. This could be viewed as insider trading and if proven could result in a prison sentence . Are our management that stupid , you know , I wouldn't put it passed them .

I thought if he was to purchase shares that would take him to majority shareholder, he would have to pay the year's high, or the years average, for them. Can't even remember where I read that now.

So forgive me for being ridiculously naive....could CWU buy a few shares for £1000 each? Hence making the entire takeover impossible.

Or is there a law against that sort of market manipulation?
