These cancelled strike days for the next fortnight have dealt us a leverage blow. We have to suck it up. I really feel the last couple of months have been a thorough waste. Dave Ward was fully aware who he was dealing with from the start, and our response so far has been powder puff.

It's allowed us to be bullied.

Not necessarily. If customers start pushing work back through Royal Mail now there’s a perceived ‘lull’ in strike action, then this - coupled with rising volumes in the run-up to Christmas - could add a bit more oomph to the strikes on Saturday 12th and Monday 14th November. It also gives those who might be starting to have difficulty with losing a day’s pay per week a clear week with no deductions.

Funny how there's an overtime ban but they're begging people to work their days off. It may come back to bite Royal Mail when posties get used to no overtime and finishing on time without having to go through 'the coversation' in a morning.

The thing is with doing loads of overtime, you can do it if you don't stop doing it, yeah it's knackering but you don't notice, it gets routine but as soon as you stop, boy you notice it then and how knackered and useless you've become for life outside of work. It certainly takes a long term toll, in my experience. I've seen too many friends die young to be spending all my time at work. If you have a fiesta, you don't try and fill it up like a Mondeo estate when you go on holiday. Moral of the story, the bigger the car you have the more you'll put in it, the more money you earn the more you'll spend. Unless you do like me and save it to buy freedom with early retirement.

Same here, I did a stack of overtime in previous years (plus made some ‘thinking out of the box’ investments which very few UK people have done before I joined RM) which means I can retire at 50, if not a year or two before.

I no longer do any OT and live on a tight budget. I’m now earning around 50% of what I did before I stopped doing OT, took some getting used to but I much prefer it this way.

Only downside is I’ve still got 9 years to go.

Well done. I'm 9 yrs further down the road from you and looking retirement in the face at 51. Don't forget to take into account inflation when you work out what you'll need to survive. Best of luck with your plan for freedom. ATB.
