Or at least not as many ... I don't believe for one minute there will be forced redunancies - this is just Thompson scaremongering; every office is well understaffed! Our managers have told us they can't see any redunancies at our place: people have left and not been replaced: if it wasn't for a few dedicated to overtime, walks would be failing left right and center!

From gov.uk

Being selected for redundancy
Your employer should use a fair and objective way of selecting you for redundancy.

Commonly used methods are:

last in, first out (employees with the shortest length of service are selected first)
asking for volunteers (self-selection)
disciplinary records
staff appraisal markings, skills, qualifications and experience

On a slightly different tack , if this company becomes a mainly parcel orientated business (and deliver parcels only on sat and sun) do you not think non-drivers will be targeted first for redundancy ? Just a thought.
Hopefully.
Scumbag - get rid of idiots like you
maybe hes a non-driver and wants away ?

I don't understand this fixation with non-drivers.. They work just as hard as anyone else; I've done barrow walks, rural, 2 man vans and I can tell you it is a lot harder on barrows than the rest!! Maybe some of this jealousy is because some have figured out if letters/parcels split, it will be the drivers doing Sundays...

Which part of we delivered 8bn letters up to march this year don't people understand!! They are not just going to go away!! Why do people in RM, and it seems to more the workforce than management, have a bee in their bonnet about non-drivers?
I was hinting at the possibility of VR, I am a non-driver.

This is the same RM managers that employ people on the basis that they can drive, revision comes along and half of them pick non-driving duties.

Turns out many of them don't like the responsibility of driving and delivering parcels. MADNESS.

I might be wrong, but even if these people are on non driving duties at the minute, if it is in their contracts to drive, if needed in the future, they will have to. As for VR, I don't see it happening because demand will be too high and cost too much.

You cannot force people too drive if they don't have a licence or people who it is not in their contract to do so.

Exactly!! :Applause This is my point; if it's not in their contract TO drive, leave the non-drivers alone! If it's in someone's contract to drive, so be it.

Well they can make you do other things like prep walks for hours and hours the only performance standards are prep rates not walk speed or how fast you can drive.

Totally agree.

I work in a small office of around 20 deliveries. We have 2 agency and 2 new starts starting in the next few weeks. Offices are understaffed. 10,000 isn't happening.

You don't have to have a young family and needing to arrange childcare to not be a fan of later starts. I'm sure if we sent out Thompson with his high-vis delivering mail on his own around some of the inner-city slum estates at 6pm on a cold wet December's night...he wouldn't survive one loop.

So he is asking/telling us to do something he cannot nor will not do himself this is not leadership it is a dereliction of duty, Look if you cannot lead by example the writing is on the wall get out!

People need to be careful. If they want people out the door looking at some of the posties PDAs in My office would be a good start.
