Now Simon Thompson hints at scrapping the Christmas Bonus

Many people I know who work in offices and other companies get £500-£1000 Christmas bonus, and/or they get treated to expensive nights out, even weekend breaks. And they just have a standard office job, whilst Christmas is a quiet period for their company but they still get a decent bonus. Never really understood why people harp on about £100 bonus every year, its not worth talking about, unless you are really desperate

A bonus of £140 after tax is an insult and embarrassing to tell people. I’ve said for years we are so under paid for the work we do. While out on delivery you see other workers who stop for a break, if it’s a cuppa from their flask or a cigarette. Not us we are expected to go continuously for 5 hours in all weathers up and down flights of stairs and hills. If we were to stop for a breather we get questioned the next day. What is all this garbage about we are better paid than our parcel delivery competitors? Yes I agree we are better paid than a very few but the majority earn a lot more than us, or are the people I speak to out on delivery lying? I know people who get 2 grand bonus at Christmas and no, they are not in fantastic jobs. Just in jobs where they are appreciated.

The 'second' is called the CWU Underpin payment but it's not actually paid by/from the Union, it's because it's for CWU
grades. Allegedly it is also performance related so if we were apparently the dogs b*!!*x during the pandemic you would have thought we would have got significantly more?!!!

Royal Mail Group CWU Productivity Scheme – Underpin payment

Royal Mail and CWU have agreed that new productivity scheme arrangements will be developed for CWU represented grades across Royal Mail. This will not replace any existing productivity schemes or payments arising from those schemes. The new arrangements will include, as a minimum, an on-going payment of £100 per year for each full time employee, with the potential for additional payments linked to performance.


The first payment was made in summer 2012. This directive authorises the fourth underpin payment to be made in December 2015. Further directives will be issued to trigger future £100 underpin payments as well as details on other productivity payments once agreed

You only lose a percentage for every day.

To be fair I've read what Simon wrote and I think it was more him thinking the same as you, that any IA during Christmas pressure would mean no bonus rather than just a reduced amount.

I don't think he was threatening to remove it unilaterally out of spite, there would probably be legal issues if he did.

Tell me about it. There's a guy in my office who I've worked with for 20 years who stopped talking to me for 2 years because I was offered 20 minutes overtime more than him once. I swear I'm not kidding!!! You couldn't make it up.

I understood it to be three separate qualifying periods (weeks) so one IA day in each week means no bonus for that week?
