Scanning in tracked parcels…

I'm surprised that manually scanning parcels in, is still a thing. In such a modern company like royal mail, you would have thought they could have solved this problem.

There's been talk on here about all the parcels scanned into a York in the mail centre being consolidated into one barcode so when it arrives at the do the barcode is scanned as received, thus eliminating the requirement to scan individually, that sounds great but obviously hasn't happened.

In-flight requests would still be an issue, unless the PDA flags those and you just pull those out when sorting the parcels for delivery. It's changes like this which could save time, not messing about changing our hours etc.

This happens with Yorks of packets received from the NW Parcel Hub. You just scan the York and it’s supposed to update every parcel inside to say it’s reached the inward MC. These items probably won’t have to be individually scanned as received at the DO, but obviously will on delivery. ATM though it’s only the larger offices who get “direct” Yorks (pre-sorted to DO level).

All that said, there does seem to be some teething problems and not all items inside the Yorks are updating - meaning packets can look like they are still at the parcel hub (on the system/customer app) when I’m reality they are out for delivery!

That sounds promising then, well in a double edged sword respect, it'll cut a lot of time spent doing it on arrival at the do so could impact on ft jobs but the alternative, scanning at your fitting idea is flawed as if you're on a duty that gets loads then you'll be shafted compared to say a rural with loads less calls.

We get cross docked York’s of tracked at our DO. Both large parcels and redskins of small. We still have to scan each individual item as ready for delivery just the same as the York’s that are sorted at the mail centre.

I think it depends on if the local MC has got a PSM, if they have then I'm guessing in theory it could keep a note of what it's sorted to each sleeve and then in theory at the DO the sleeve/york would get one scan which would then show all the items as having arrived at the DO. Then each walk would scan the ones that will be getting delivered.

We already sort large Tracked and large normal together, think it's only a matter of time before they have us do the same for the small Tracked and small normal
