I don't want anymore strikes because it will just be more losses and we are not going to get what we want except crush the business and get even less. I like my job and will rather stick with it even with the small changes:
No more compulsory Sundays - that was always going to be a part of the negotiation IMO - the Sunday service is not that important at this stage and they have enough volunteers in addition to those on new contracts or Sundays exclusive staff...
Later starts - accomodation of those with severe needs was something the Union should have gone for instead of saying No to that and other things
Sick and absence - no brainer; it had to change and this change is minimal
SISO and Annualised hours was also not going to be a deal breaker - Royal Mail can still monitor how much work is done and cut down on overtime. Also, they now allow Posties to leave mail and parcels; so it was never going to be work till it is finished - we are not slaves!
The rest is up to them how they run the business - it is a private company not a public service anymore!

* I will accept this new deal but the 3.5% has to be backdated to April - that should be what our Union should be fighting for not more strikes and loss of wages and business
A lot of people in my office are beginning to think the same way . As for owner drivers and a two tier workforce it's too late . Going by a circular I read this evening Royal Mail are going to start recruiting them from tomorrow .

Should be a 5% year on year pay rise with just a cheeky local revision with input from OPGs to help maximise efficiency but they won't think like that.

OMG! What is wrong with giving child-friendly terms to some people... What is this big deal about finishing early (what does early even mean)?

We are going to have a several-tier workforce and it will happen...

The folks that think the job will not be worth doing going forwards can alway quit and go and get one of those many jobs that we keep hearing is out there.

The new entrants contract is going to be different but they are getting more hours and even an enhanced overtime rate (something our Union bargained away years and years ago).

Yes, they will have to commit to work weekends including Sunday for the same rate but they will be applying for the job with their eyes wide open knowing what it entails.

And there will be many takers - let's not kid ourselves that Royal Mail is even close to be over of the worst employers...

No-one should be willing to accept a flat 1.5% increase for next year.

Remove that - and this deal doesn’t look much different to the previous one.

True it’s clever dressing up or an awful deal and the CWU will have their work cut out because there will be many that will be blinded by the 9% and rather that than continue striking.

I'm convinced Thompson has been bullied for most of his life and now he's got himself into a position of power he's determined to make someone pay for his life of misery.

He's a horrible greasy weasel. I bet even his family think he's a twonk of the highest order. Imagine that - your own kids thinking "Christ my dad is a real bell end". We already know what his grandfather would think of him :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle
Is he married with kids??? CHRIST ALMIGHTY!!!

Mail Centre: full brief about the new deal - no one was working and lots of questions asked. Manager trying to convince them to take the deal

Delivery: No brief whatsoever! A sheet of paper with the deal around the signing sheet! Hardly anyone talking about the deal but almost all rushing around whereas the work is quiet.

Ignorance seemed Bliss in Delivery. Yet, delivery is the one being hammered with the changes... Go figure!

If this deal went to the membership it will go through.
After reading some of the bile dished out to contributors on here you wonder whether its the apocalypse coming .
This forum is supposed to be just that , a forum. Chris J makes some very good points yet is put down at every oppertunity.
It was obvious that any pay increase would come with change even the most militant have to agree that.
When i read comments such as i hope the company burns etc i just truly despair.
I started in 1975 , my son started in 2000. When i told him about the old overtime rates he was envious, obviously!! So he joined on lesser terms than me.
Times have changed we have to accept that.
Before the negative comments come on saying that i retire soon, yes i do .This job has been good to me , i still enjoy it .I choose to be a reserve so i'm moved about , to other offices as well.
What Simon Thompson has put on the table isn't what we want but the union have to be careful with their response.

Can you explain why you think new entrants are getting more hours ?

They are employed on 40 hours. It is on another thread here. The differences also highlighted in a table.

I should also add that the jobs on newer terms were being advertised before the announcement yesterday. It is here somewhere on this forum

Pretty sure they'll be employed pt and paid pro rata based on 40hrs.
They won't be given 40hr contracts. RM don't want ft contract, new start employees anymore that's why there is a shortage in every facet of the business. The vision for the future seems to be pt and self employed. If you think it's anything else then your either not reading this right or you are deluded. Not really a good plan for the business long term is it!

No they are not, their hourly rate is based on 40 hours, which means they will receive a lower hourly rate than part timers are on at the moment .

Thanks to the senior 1975 poster for his supportive comments.

I think it is important for the silent ones to speak up because this forum, along with Twitter and Facebook can be used or are being used to gauge opinions of postmen and women on the issues and this new deal.

The Twitter militants are gradually being diluted by other opinions. I don't know about Facebook or Workplace because they are no anonymous. But I gauge that people are getting fed up of the uncertainty, the lack of clarity from the CWU, the mistakes, the over confidence and the dire situation that more strikes and strife can lead to.

It is time for the CWU to come up with a plan!
