It doesn't mean their job made them any more likely to be victims.

Sadly we won’t know for quite a while but I can describe some of the London mail centre’s working conditions which seem to tally with a lot of what is being posted about other mc’s, do’s and hubs:

A large percentage of 55-65 year old workers limping on to retirement with no “obvious” health conditions.

Dozens of Angard casuals who continuously change in personnel, are often desperate to work, and have no direct dialogue opportunity with RM to discuss whether they have been ill or have health needs.

Overtime junkies who work 13 hours a day who don’t really care about anything other than money

Managers, promoted above their intelligence, being briefed that their performance is still subject to review

All working side by side and on top of each other.

Half the employees travelling in on crowded public transport with other key workers who have been directly exposed to the disease.

I could go on...

well said ! yeah overtime junkies they disgust me making money from other peoples misery !

When the virus kicked in we were told no agency staff from now on - this policy didn't even last 1 day
We were told only selected Angard people would work and they would be vetted - again didn't last a day

They introduced a new staff management system which randomises who from the agency works e.g. everybody is supposed to get a shift
This means less productivity but also means every new person gets shifts BUT means a constant flow of new people and the regular staff are reduced
H&S doesn't seem to interest RM when working with Agency staff - I saw it myself when I worked for Angard and with the virus, nothing has really changed

I guess given the hours I work I would be considered an overtime junkie but I do need to generate higher wages to ever a afford a mortgage
I'm careful but social distancing doesn't really work in the confined areas of the mail centre
I know several RM staff are working more hours but they have told me this is as much to escape from being stuck at home

Law firm Irwin Mitchell has accused Royal Mail for allegedly failing to provide its agency workers with the same protection from coronavirus as other employed postal workers.
The law firm has written to Royal Mail’s lawyers concerning what they called “apparent prejudicial treatment of agency workers” by not providing workers the individual bottles of hand sanitiser as other Royal Mail staff receive.

Royal Mail has provided each Royal Mail employee with an individual bottle of hand sanitiser as a health & safety precaution to use when they are at the mail centre. “However,” a statement from Irwin Mitchell said, “when employees of Angard Staffing Solutions (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Royal Mail), who carry out the same job as Royal Mail employees, asked for the same treatment, they were told that the hand sanitisers are for Royal Mail employees only.”

The Irwin Mitchell statement quoted mail sorter Ashfaq Ahmed of the Leeds Mail Centre, who said: “I have watched my Royal Mail colleagues receive individual bottles of hand sanitiser. I queried this to my manager who told me that because we don’t work regularly, they can’t provide hand sanitiser to us. However, there is no communal hand sanitiser available either.” He added that his shifts had doubled since the outbreak of coronavirus.

The agency workers were told to use communal sanitisers supplied by Royal Mail, but Irwin Mitchell said that those appeared to have been introduced on Friday at some sites only.

Citing terms of the Agency Workers Regulations 2010, Irwin Mitchell said: “This flies in the face of current employment law.”

The law firm went on to say that it believes this practice is “widespread and likely to be occurring at numerous mail sorting sites affecting large numbers of agency mail sorters”.

Irwin Mitchell is already pursuing a Group Action Litigation on behalf of 66 agency workers in employment tribunal claims against Angard Staffing Solutions and Royal Mail Group on the grounds of unequal treatment of agency workers.

The number is obviously a lot higher. It’s a disgrace how flagrant RM are with their blatant lies and spin. This thumbs up for posties was the last straw for me.

RM trading on the goodwill that WE on the frontline have the public, just to boost their brand.

All the while they're treating us like absolute dirt, working us into the ground and making us risk our lives without basic protections during this crisis . Royal Mail, lowest of the low.
