Four postal workers have tested positive for coronavirus at a Merseyside delivery office, Royal Mail has confirmed.

The staff members, who were all working at the Woolton delivery office on Woolton Street, are 'recuperating' after testing positive for the virus.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail confirmed the office had undergone an 'intensive clean' and is now operating as normal.

As a result of the positive test results within the delivery office, other staff members are also off work awaiting their own test results.

Speaking to the ECHO, a spokesperson for the postal service said: “Royal Mail takes the health and safety of its colleagues, its customers and the local communities in which we operate very seriously.

"Four people at our Woolton Delivery Office have recently tested positive for coronavirus.

"They are currently recuperating and we wish them a speedy recovery. Those who are awaiting test results are off work. We have since carried out an intensive clean of the Delivery Office. The office is operating as normal."

They added: "Throughout this crisis, every decision we make puts the health of our people and customers first. We have put in place a range of preventive measures to protect both our customers and our colleagues.

"We were the first UK company to put in place social-distancing measures in relation to parcel delivery. We pioneered contact-free delivery.

"We are temporarily not handing over our hand-held devices to customers to capture signatures.

"As well as encouraging good hand hygiene, standard ways of working have been revised to ensure that colleagues stay two metres apart at all times. In addition we have moved to a one person per van delivery model.

"All staff have been briefed about the social distancing measures jointly agreed by local management and the CWU. This has been supplemented with visible reminders such as posters and one-way floor markings.”

Further local lockdown restrictions are expected to be announced for the Merseyside area shortly, due to the rising number of cases within the region.

They should all be isolating for 14 days as virus can take this long before being infected! That’s the government advice, being tested negative now doesn’t mean you haven’t contacted it off someone you have been close too it can be in your body for up to 14 days before you become positive
