The sorting office will remain closed for the time being

Six postal workers have tested positive for coronavirus with further cases likely as investigations and testing continues at Barnsley's Royal Mail depot.

The Pitt Street sorting office was forced to shut after staff walked out on Monday amid fears of an "outbreak".

It closed again on Wednesday and while Royal Mail initially said the depot would reopen on June 26, health bosses have now confirmed that it will stay shut for the time being with the closure likely to cause disruption to postal deliveries in the area.

Julia Burrows, Director of Public Health at Barnsley said: “Firstly, I’d like to wish anyone who has contracted the virus a speedy recovery.

“We’re aware of a total of six cases positive confirmed cases of coronavirus at Barnsley’s Royal Mail sorting office with further cases possible as investigations and staff testing continues. A number of staff are self-isolating.

“The building remains closed for deep cleaning before reopening is considered.

“Barnsley Council’s Regulatory Service Team and colleagues from Public Health England are working with Royal Mail to understand how the virus is being spread across the workforce; looking at possibilities inside and outside of the premises and what we can do to reduce and prevent this."

Regulatory Services officers will be inspecting the premises following a deep clean, once it is back up and running.

Anyone displaying symptoms is advised to self-isolate and request a coronavirus test to prevent transmission in the community.

People are urged to regularly wash their hands, social distance and wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces.

“We must double our efforts as a whole community in Barnsley to adhere firmly to guidance to protect ourselves, each other, and save lives,” added Ms Burrows.
