A brief experience of a night in my mail centre under the current situation.

Last night I arrived at work parked my car and was about to go into work to sign on. I quickly retreated as the hordes of staff from the late shift exited the building on mass. No provisions seem to have been put in place for social distancing when leaving the building. When the crowd had dispersed, I enter the building to sign on in the now restricted sign on area (fair play royal mail).

At commencement of my shift yet again we were given no update about the coronavirus and how it affected our place of work, no updates on working practices, no reminder of the 2-metre rule, in fairness a manager came round offering rubber gloves (fair play royal mail).

I had expressed a concern at the beginning of the week regarding social distancing, we have sorting belts which are located less than 2 metres apart from each other. As they continued to be used, I questioned how the maintained the social distancing guidelines where being maintained? My response (from a union rep) was that because staff where not face to face it was ok. (I have continued to push this issue, and it is apparently under review over the weekend).

We have and abundance of agency staff in the office to deal with the uptake in online shopping (Christmas come early for Royal Mail), I am not sure drafting in extra workers complies with government directive of stay at home if you can(what’s essential?).

I look around the mail centre and can see staff carrying on as normal. People chatting in close vicinity, hugging, shaking hands, etc. Can they not see the danger? Staff do not respect other people's safe space; I have seen people walk from one area to another to chat (your friends will (hopefully) still be there when this is all over) WAKE UP!

I questioned the fact that we were using a communal walkie talkie on our machine without any alcoholic wipes and was made to feel like I was making a fuss over nothing.

Staff are working in close quarters constantly and unless you are prepared to stand up for yourself you will be expected to do the same. I have heard that one manager said “if you don’t like it go home and don’t get paid”

The dispatch area is a nightmare, not a chance of maintaining the 2-metre rule (I personally leave the area when I feel it is unsafe).

In my mail centre the management (backed by the union) have done as little as they can to make thing safe, the business remains the priority. Staff need to wake up and realise the danger.

If ever there was a time to overreact IT’S NOW

Then you've done the right thing, keep making noises and keep being a pain in the arse to them, one day they may thank you.
I thank you.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my union rep said bollox so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, CWU union reps and some members are still being the low life dicks they have always been.

I will run out of space on my signature soon. (For desktop only not mobile peeps)

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Well done!

My current argument is the lack of cleaners.
There should be an extra cleaner on every shift with the sole responsibility of cleaning door hand handles/frames key clamps and anything else we can come into contact with.

Now is not the time to make savings.

There are over 1000 people employed at my Mail Centre, when 1 gets it we will likely all get it.

Based on 1% getting the disease dying, that could potentially be 10 of my colleagues not being here in 3 months time.

WAKE UP PEOPLE - CHALLENGE MANAGEMENT AND THEIR BEHAVIOUR.
