Packet levels pre COVID
Will packet levels return to pre COVID? Will it be like this until Christmas pressure?

I imagine packet levels will remain higher than normal for some time simply because, even with shops reopening, a lot of people will still be reluctant to return to them until the infection rate is lower.
Someone did say to me the other day imagine if we get a second wave in winter and non essential shops had to close again in the run up to Christmas. I really don’t think Royal Mail would cope with that.

There was a shop chain mentioned fairly recently in the news that's shutting all their physical shops and moving to on-line only. I wouldn't be surprised to see all clothes shops do that

I think many people are taking advantage of the fact that they are home to accept parcels
When most are back at work hopefully not ordering as many as dont want to traipse to collection offices etc

There's also the fact that you could be furloughed on 100% of your wages without the normal expenses of working, no opportunity to spend money in restaurants or pubs, no expensive holiday, almost zero fuel costs and limited physical shopping opportunities.
That's a lot of extra disposable income.

Yeah cracking thought........ let’s hope people don’t order as much stuff so we can lose some more business!! What is it with people in RM constantly hoping that we lose work.Acca Dacca wrote:I think many people are taking advantage of the fact that they are home to accept parcels

Maybe it's the fact the service is buckling under the pressure and we're all knackered. Yeah give us more parcels please.GRS wrote:Yeah cracking thought........ let’s hope people don’t order as much stuff so we can lose some more business!! I've got several elderly customers that never get packets now receiving multiple ones a week. Teach a man to fish...
The machine stops.

Well we all need to get used to the idea as within the next 5-10 years chances are that half of the physical shops will close with firms moving to online onlyJahpostie wrote:Maybe it's the fact the service is buckling under the pressure and we're all knackered. Yes we get used to the idea, when we have adequate staff numbers and smaller walks to be able to complete. Is this board full of managers or something? Or are they delivering in an alternative universe because here in my reality we are short staffed and the parcels just keep coming.SpacePhoenix wrote:Well we all need to get used to the idea as within the next 5-10 years chances are that half of the physical shops will close with firms moving to online onlyJahpostie wrote:Maybe it's the fact the service is buckling under the pressure and we're all knackered. My guess is that they'll split the letters and flats side off into a sub-business and if they can have delivery of them a maximum of twice a week. I reckon they'll have a big push at some point to get 2D bar codes on ALL parcels. Once they do, the dynamic planning of walks each day is a possibilityJahpostie wrote:Yes we get used to the idea, when we have adequate staff numbers and smaller walks to be able to complete. Can't cope now. It's getting harder to get rid of pkts too now less people are in.Zicomurphy wrote:I imagine packet levels will remain higher than normal for some time simply because, even with shops reopening, a lot of people will still be reluctant to return to them until the infection rate is lower.

In a word - NO
I think companies have woken up to the idea, that if their staff can work from home then they should.
They can save tons of money by not having to pay for utilities, renting a building etc..
So those staff who work from home, will carry on ordering crap off the Internet as they wont have to get off their backsides and get it from shops.

Well we might be more keen on the idea of more business/work if there was some suggestion that the company is actually profiting from it and not the doom and gloom we have heard recently.GRS wrote:Yeah cracking thought........ let’s hope people don’t order as much stuff so we can lose some more business!!
